Whitby has to be one Of the prettiest towns anywhere, traditional seaside resort at its very best and some of the best fish and chips shops in the country, the old town and harbour are a delight to stroll around, sit on one of the secluded benches around the harbour and watch the the pleasure fishing crafts return with their catch.

Met at twilight for a walk across Whitby with a really knowledgeable guide. Claire made the walk interesting, adding the details of the Bram Stoker story in context. Her knowledge of the town kept our interest for 1 and a half hours as we moved through the tunnel at the start, right through the alleys and courts. Few of us had read the book, but I will be reading it soon. The two students were interested and we were all happy to have joined the tour. The cost of £5 was fair and we were sad that we could not join the ghost walk which was on the Friday. A brisk pace, but manageable .

An amazing church with a collection of early PRB creations, a truly rare collection of Burne-Jones, Rossetti, Stanhope, Webb, Maddox Brown, Morris art in original situ in an interesting Bodley Church. Historically interesting too, with it being proto-Catholic/Tractarian in a geography that was not at all! Church is not open every day nor all of the time, so do check its opening times. Very worth a visit if you are a Pre-Raphaelite or Victorian art fan.

We were walking a loop from Sandsend; through Mulgrave Woods to Mulgrave Castle and then around to join the Cleveland Way so we could walk the Geocache Art Trail - which is fab! (reviewed separately) We were walking nearby to St Oswald Church and it is so picturesque that we decided to walk closer and have a look. The church was so photogenic underneath a beautiful blue sky and we enjoyed wandering around the old gravestones. The graveyard has great views out to sea and several benches to sit and meditate. This church is located right on the main road from Whitby, just before Sandsend. There is free parking available in the lane just before the church, then it is a short 1 minute walk to the church gates. It is only now that I have read about the church being repaired using old Viking gravestone, so I regret not having gone inside. Will definitely pop in next time we're back in this area.

This is an unusual modern war memorial set in a small paved square in front of Whitby harbour. I found the modern granite obelisk quite striking in it’s simplicity set above stone steps providing a fitting plinth to set wreaths on during Remembrance commemorations. There is an information board. It is well worth a look. We shall not forget
