The history of this patrol frigate is really fascinating. Constructed in California in 1944, the ship first served in the U.S. and took part in MacArthur's landing operations in Leyte. Soon after that, the ship was refitted and provided to the Soviet Union under a lend-lease program, with expectations the Soviets were going to join with the Allies in fighting Japan. After WWII ended, the U.S. spent four years negotiating the return of the ship (in 1949). It then saw action at the start of the Korean War as an American navy ship again. It was subsequently transferred to the Royal Thai Navy in 1951 and was a part of the Thai navy until decommissioned in 2000. Visitors can climb all about the ship, play with the remaining guns, and pretend to captain the ship from the bridge. No charge for this attraction of fascinating interest.
