Rajasthan (/ˈrɑːdʒəstæn/ Hindustani pronunciation: [raːdʒəsˈt̪ʰaːn] ( listen); literally, "Land of Kings") is India's largest state by area (342,239 square kilometres (132,139 sq mi) or 10.4% of India's total area). It is located on the north western side of the India, where it comprises most of the wide and inhospitable Thar Desert (also known as the "Rajasthan Desert" and "Great Indian Desert") and shares a border with the Pakistani provinces of Punjab to the northwest and Sindh to the west, along the Sutlej-Indus river valley. Elsewhere it is bordered by five other Indian states: Punjab to the north; Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to the northeast; Madhya Pradesh to the southeast; and Gujarat to the southwest.

An amazing piece of historical gem. Beautifully preserved despite its tumultuous history spanning across multiple eras. From the Rajputs to Mughals and afghans this place has been visited by who is who of the Indian history and has so many stories to offer. Be it tales of rajputi bravery, rani padmavti's legend, mira bai's unparalleled devotion or khilji's savagery (who destroyed quite a bit of the place). Be it the monumental vijay stambha, kirti stambha, rani padmavati's palace or suraj pol (in front of which numerous monumental battles were fought) every place has chilling stories to offers. The fort premises are maintained by Archaeological Society of India which offers tour guides and a light & sound show at reasonable prices.Every monument inside palace premises can be driven up and takes about a 3 hours to cover at leisuerely pace (ie if you go up victroy and kirti towers). The light and sound show is offered during the evening in a surreal settings and is a must attend.

This is the birth place of one of the legendary heros of India - Maha Rana Pratap and it has world's second largest wall after Great Wall of China - this fort's boundary wall spans 36 KM. Beautifully constructed fort has various interesting facts and its top is at such height that you feel like flying in air as winds blows without any interruption at the top. Must visit if your nearby. Lot of walking required so be ready for good exercise Guides are all private and you need to bargain and can reach price of INR 400-450 Very old temple also inside the fort, so you may want to pay tribute to Kul Devi of Kumbhal Dynasty

You can see the Karan Mahal, which was built with Mughal architectural influences. Then The beautiful Phool Mahal, which happens to be the oldest part of the palace complex. Again The lavishly decorated Anoop Mahal which was the private audience chamber of the King of Bikaner , lastly not to forget the grand Durbar Hall with the ceremonial 1,100-year-old sandalwood throne. The main attraction though for many is the famous war souvenir - the DH-9DE Havilland War Plane which was given in recognition of the service rendered by the Bikaner State Forces led by Maharaja Ganga Singh Ji of Bikaner during 1st World War which gives every Indian a moment of pride. A must must visit palace

Saw this way back in December when I visited the Amber fort. It's one of the many magnificent gates in the courtyard and named after the Hindu god Ganesh and is the entry into what was originally the private palaces of the Maharajas of Amer.

I had read about the amazing stepwells of Rajasthan- but these go way beyond any written description. Truly something to see - incredible architectural fete and a brilliant concept used in the past to gather water. As the water level dropped, you would simply walk down to the next level. Used in the past for both water and social gatherings.
