Quebec City may be the only fortified city north of Mexico, but it welcomes visitors with open arms. Explore the Citadel, where you might catch Canadian troops staging a military ceremony. As for food, you could splurge on afternoon tea at the Chateau Frontenac, or do as the locals do and snack on poutine—french fries with gravy and cheese curds.

This once bustling port now serves as a nostalgic reminder of Lower Town's history.
During our “10-Day Canada and New England” cruise aboard Caribbean Princess, our ship arrived at her final destination, Quebec City. The cruise ship terminal, Le Terminal-Port of Quebec, in the Old Port area had modern facilities, and we could easily walk to the Old Quebec’s attractions, including Quartier Petit Champlain shopping area. The funicular as well as the staircases in the shopping area could be used to go up to the major attractions on the Upper Town of Old Quebec. The major road near the port was also convenient way to transport the disembarking/embarking passengers to/from Quebec airport or Quebec train station (Gare du Palais). Upon our disembarkation, we took a short taxi ride to Gare du Palais from the taxi stand right outside the cruise terminal to extend our travel to Montreal by VIA Rail Canada.

This famous town plaza is the heart of historic Lower Town and has been an important social center since the city's founding.
There was a deep blanket of snow because of a blizzard the day we arrived, but it's amazing how quickly they get the snow out of the narrow old roads in lower town. Beautiful square with stone buildings up to 300 years old capped by snow, pedestrians only, almost like a fairy tale. There's even a modern, clean public washroom just off the square.

Great place to find good restaurants for every pocketbook and nightlife. Also, good as a point of reference so you maintain your bearings while walking about. Grande Allee runs into Rue St. Louis at the gate into the old city.

La Fresque des Quebecois is a beautiful large mural, created by three artists from Paris. They came to Quebec City about 20 years ago, and studied the history of the city with the help of 1500 photos. Based on what they learned, they created this amazing mural. Don't miss it!
