Biscay (Basque: Bizkaia; Spanish: Vizcaya) is a province of Spain located just south of the Bay of Biscay. The name also refers to a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Biscay. Its capital city is Bilbao. It is one of the most prosperous and important provinces of Spain as a result of the massive industrialization in the last years of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Since the deep deindustrialization of the 1970s, the economy has come to rely more on the services sector.

A visit to Guernica should include the General Assembly buildings and grounds. It is here that the Guernica Oak, symbol of Basque freedom, stands. What you see now is a lovely tree that was planted in 2015, the fifth iteration of the traditional 'Guernikako Arbola'. You have to walk a little further and to find the proud remains of the last oak, now a thick trunk enclosed in a tiny, classical, Greek style temple. The original Guernica tree shaded the assemblies of the local people beginning in the 1400's and the link between it and the freedom of the people is strong. We were moved by the sight, having looked at the beautiful General Assembly building and Picasso's painting (replica) of 'Guernica' beforehand.

A walk through the Biscayan Art of the last 800 years. An exposition from romanesque to present day.

Really lovely vibrant square in the old town of Bilbao, great choice of bars and restaurants with a good variety of pinxtos, really reasonably priced, would recommend the local wine, which is lovely and so cheap. A nice mix of locals, families and tourists all relaxing and enjoying the food and drink. They had a little market on Sunday, selling books, records and other bits. Great place to go day and night, to eat, drink and people watch.

We took the metro from the city to Areeta station and took the the Gondola over to Portugalete. It is a 35 minute ride on the metro from the city to Areeta and then another 7 minute walk from the station to the bridge. It is an engineering marvel considering this was built back in 1893 and was the first mechanical transporter bridge in the world. The ingenuity of Alberto de Palacio to design this transporter to join both banks of the river while still allowing transport ships to pass through unhindered to the port of Bilbao is just brilliant. Portugalate is a nice quaint town to visit as well. It is also quite a hilly town and sections of it had escalators to assist the residents in navigating their daily activities around town. Very cool.

This is a must go if you're in Gexto. Picture-postcard corner, with great views, great atmosphere, great bars/restaurants and a wonderful, unexpected experience. Not to be missed.

Mundaca was one of our favourite spots in the Basque Country, and definitely the one that surprised us the most. The port is extremely beautiful and feels very natural and picturesque. One of the building is under renovation now; as soon as they finish it is going to be astounding!

Puerto de Elantxobe is the harbour of this tiny town located in Bizkaia Coast, in Basque Country. The town and the harbour are very nice. In fact is a little town on the side of a mountain, from where you can see very nice views of the sea and the town. Really, you can walk around all old streets and see every place. Great. The town seems of other epoch, when seafarers and fishers go to sea every day and they fight agains the sea and storms. (See also Ayuntamiento de Elantxobe and Cabo de Ogoño)
