HELLO KOALAS SCULPTURE TRAIL, PORT MACQUARIE is a fun and entertaining day out for people of all ages and it's FREE! There are 75+ one metre high fibreglass koala sculptures, dotted across the region, from the mountains to the sea. The hand painted sculptures, created by local artists, offer a dazzling display of original artwork. Hello Koalas is a bold, ambitious and imaginative sculpture project, celebrating one of Australia's iconic animals - the Koala. It's designed to generate a sense of surprise for everyone who comes across the creatively decorated koalas resting in parkland, lazing by the river, waiting outside the shops, or playing with children. Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail Guide is free from many tourism outlets, including the Visitor Information Centre at the Glasshouse on Clarence Street, or download a pdf online before you arrive. Hello Koalas sculptures are sponsored by local businesses and organisations to enable the Trail to be a free experience for everyone to enjoy!
Upon arriving at my hotel in Port Macquarie the first thing I noticed was a sculpture of a koala outside the hotel. I soon learnt that there were many other koala sculptures like this around Port Macquarie and that the aim was to try and find all of the sculptures. If you go to Sea Acres Rainforest Centre they have a map you can take which shows you where all of the sculptures are, you can also get a map from the offical Hello Koala's store where they work on the sculptures and sell merchandise. I met the Woman behind Hello Koala's Margret Meagher, she invited me into the shop and kindly shared with me the history of Hello Koalas. During a trip to the UK Margret came across the Larkin With Toads Public Art Project which inspired her to create Hello Koalas, she felt that these sculptures would be a good way to engage and up lift the community, Margret also explained that these sculptures can be beneficial to people with Dementia as art has been proven to help people with Dementia as it can increase brain stimulation and improve memory. The sculptures are all hand painted by Australian artists, I think this project is amazing and I wish we had this here in Sydney, it was great fun going around with my map and one by one ticking the sculptures off.

A not too long drive from Port Macquarie to Old Bottlebutt to get there........but be warned if you are using Googlemaps and it shows a quicker/shorter option off Internal Break Rd - to go along King Creek Rd: DO NOT TAKE IT like we did!! We did and only just managed to drive along it and return ????. It was very narrow and gravelly and undulating in parts! Stick to driving on Internal Break Rd and Jimmy Rd which lead to a carpark and picnic area with drop toilets. The tree was worth the drive!

This is a historically important spot in Newcastle, although most of it is now gone. This was the place of the first wharf, where coal was exported and ships unloaded cargo. Now it's a great spot to relax, have a nice walk and take in the views of Nobby's Headland, Stockton Beach and the Harbor.

Lotsa good memories of the spit, beach, lighthouse and views of both beach side and harbour side, including tug boats pulling huge tankers out to sea.... And whales to top it off
