If you like Art Deco architecture, you must visit Napier. The town was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1931, then completely rebuilt in gorgeous Art Deco style. A number of local wineries also offer tours and tastings.

Outstanding statuary abounds in Napier, not the least of which is this attractive Art Deco example on the mall. It took us a couple trips up and down the walkway before we figured out that she is waving to a little boy who is climbing a pole on the opposite side of the street! Very cute.

This memorial on Clive Square is a well kept focal point in Napier and along with the Soundshell on Marine Parade, draw large gatherings on Rememberance Days. A place of respect for those who gave their lives during the wars. It's also next to the Saturday Market area which has many diverse traders there with food and drinks which can be taken to the grassed areas in the memorial area to partake of as a picnic. So enjoy, but don't forget.
