The Yucatan capital has both colonial and Mayan treasures to discover. Nearby ruins at Uxmal give some insight into the lives of the predecessors of the conquistadores, who arrived in 1542. Mayan culture is also still evident in Merida's daily life and in the many colorful festivals celebrated here.

The main site, Uxmal, is perhaps the most beautiful in all of Yucatan, though it is worth the effort to hire a guide to see Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, and Labna, which are just down the road. You can stay at Uxmal, Ticul, or Santa Elena.

This wide avenue, modeled after Paris' Champs Elysees, is lined with the mansions of Merida's old aristocracy.
Historic Merida has narrow sidewalks and the main street, Calle 60, is not a pleasant walk because busses and trucks practically brush up against you as they dominate the road and you must walk single file. A bit north of historic district Paseo de Montejo has wide sidewalks, interesting old mansions, and actually allows for pleasant ambling.

After all you're at the zocalo and it's free! Interesting historical themed paintings - huge! - by local artist with explanations also in English. Lovely architecture. Views from upstairs of the zocalo and side street, seats, free toilet - a good place to get out of the het.

There are a number of interesting galleries along Calle 60 on either side of the park itself. Definitely take a look at Maruja Barbachano ( # 445) for high end women ‘s clothing (and other interesting items) and also see SoHo at #400 (closer to Paseo Montejo). There is also an outstanding silver shop on the square and the small church is very nice. A local market is off one of the side street. Parking can be a challenge but a walk in this neighborhood is definitely worth the effort.

This hacienda was recommended to us by our hotel hostess in Progreso. After visiting a neighbouring hacienda with cenote, we stopped here for lunch. We came just a few muinuts before they opened luckily, as the huge dining area filled up quickly. The grounds are stunning, we could wander through the little museums with beautiful art work, the cenote and theatre area at the back is absolutely beautiful, I bet it would be amazing for concerts. The food in the restaurant was some of the best we have had during our trip, I had a pork dish with tasty sauce, hubby had a shrimp dish with beets which was great. Service was excellent, some English spoken and the prices were very reasonable, less than $30 CAD for 4 beers and 2 entrées. This place is off the beaten path, south of Mericpda, but if you are on the way to Uxmal, or going to a neighbouring hacienda, definitely worth a stop.

This small street is an outdoor show of the arts, they have sculptures along this alley way right next to the Merida Cathedral on the heart of the old town Very clever idea
