The 10 Best Points of Interest & Landmarks in Madrid, Community of Madrid

December 28, 2021 Misti Hsu

So many of Madrid’s buildings look like castles, you’ll think you’ve stumbled into a fairytale. Even City Hall is astounding, with its white pinnacles and neo-Gothic features. A self-guided architecture tour can begin by the great bear statue in the central Puerta del Sol. Wander by the fanciful Royal Palace before absorbing the natural beauty of Retiro Park, then visit one of the city’s many museums. You could happily cap off each day by nibbling on forkfuls of paella while sipping Spanish rioja.

Puerta de Alcala

Reviewed By Homfirth - Holmfirth, United Kingdom

This is considered to be the first modern post-Roman triumphal arch built in Europe even older than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. It was a gate in the former Walls of Felipe IV and stands near the main entrance to the Parque del Buen Retiro. Today it is in the centre of a very busy traffic intersection and it’s difficult to take photos because of the continual stream of traffic.

Foundation Mapfy is accommodated in a building designed by the famous architect Agustín Ortiz de Villajos for the Duchess of Medina de las Torres which I found it underwhelming. But if you love art, you will love the immersive displays kept here. Is the place to watch full Surrealist Miró, Joanhe passed by Abstract, Cubism... Foundation Mapfy got a collection of 60 masterpieces to learn, to watch and enjoy! Especially there is Free Entry on Mondays from 2.00 pm to 8.00 pm and general admissions only Euros 3 per person. I strongly recommend you to have half hour stop here in case you are having lunch at the nearby restaurant liked I did. But if you ask me if this worth a special detour to come and visit, I will have to say no unless the tempeory exhibition is extraordinary. So please check it up before making any decision.

This is a beautiful cathedral. The construction start in the late 19th century, but was inaugurated by the Pope John Paul II in 1993. Although it is a modern building, it is really nice in the inside with beautiful altars and in the crypt the patroness of Madrid, Our Lady of the Almudena.

Monasterio Del Corpus Christi

If you can find it, this is a really unique experience while in Madrid. Find the buzzer outside, and let the cloistered nuns know you're there. If they're selling cookies, they'll buzz you in. Follow the signs through a courtyard and you'll end up at a lazy susan with a list of cookies for sale and the prices. You never see anyone because they're cloistered, but through the turntable you tell them what you want and put down your money. It spins, you wait a minute, it spins again and out comes your cookies. The cookies are simple but tasty. The experience is fantastic.
