This site is closed for now. We’re working hard to gradually reopen the places you love while making sure the experience is safe for everyone. Dumbarton Castle is located in the ancient capital of Scotland and is spectacularly sited on a volcanic rock overlooking River Clyde. Conquer more than 500 steps to stand atop one of Scotland’s greatest strongholds. The iconic Rock of the Clyde has heritage as breathtaking as its views over the Clyde, Loch Lomond and Argyll. This dramatic volcanic plug, which is Dumbarton Rock, in-filled the crater of a volcano that was active 350 million years ago. Admire great examples of 18th century Georgian military architecture and stunning views from the Tower Crag. Throughout Dumbarton Castle’s long history it has been a royal residence and a fortress, and has fascinating connections from the Vikings to the Scottish Wars of Independence.
Still under continuous restoration this is one of Scotlands interesting history spots with fantastic views of the surrounding area, depending on how high you want to clime the many stairs. The notice boards give an informative guide into the history of the Castle and its purpose in past times , and some interesting facts about the Scottish Royals ? A great place to visit so don't drive past go in and enjoy.

This was the first stone circle that we saw. The gate to the pasture was open so we were able to get up close and personal.

its a small village, located on the shores of lake. From first sight it seems as a touristic place, where you can create best ever pictures about paradise. Sure it depends on weather, but we were lucky. Shops, restaurants, bars, pier, walks, beautiful panoramas and friendly people that all makes this place unique. Houses made from stones and rocks. There are parkings in the village for tourists so no worries, where to park a car.

Beautiful architecture, in the form of a wooden Viewing Pyramid that then allows wonderful views across Loch Lomond. Solid, steady stepped access via the purpose built path to the left from the car park. Therefore not suitable for prams/wheelchairs as such, but is only a gentle route so easily reachable for those without any mobility issues, even if elderly or not avid walkers. But be fair if you enjoy it, and drop a coin or two in the charity donation support box just behind it.

With forest map and well signed trails, easy to follow. Paths muddy in places. Nice countryside. Part of route is a cycle path too

Having viewed the falls we ventured along the trail which led us to the western end of Loch Tay. Great opportunity to spend some time exploring the surrounding area of Killin. We enjoyed a super walk in summer sunshine with glorious scenery. The walk offers easy walking along decent paths and crosses the river via the old viaduct.

Callendar is a lovely area to explore. Nice shops and lovely views. The church is beautiful and in the centre of the town. There is also a nice walk along the river Teith by the car park. When we visited the river had burst its banks so please be careful.
