The Samaguri Satra members excel in mask making specific to the Ramayana characters and others too. We were fortunate to meet the main artisan who gave us a guided tour of the facility. The masks are first made from bamboo and clay then features made from cow dung and final layer of clay, then painted. The masks also have a recess for the chin that moves the lower jaw of the mask while the character speaks! Another thing of note was the handcrafted hats and purses etc which are made from water Hyacinth! (a weed that has not much use otherwise that I know of!) An entertaining and awe inspiring visit!
