Kyoto—a city of quaint streets and picturesque avenues lined with wooden houses from a time gone by. The denizens of the city still embody this old-fashioned existence. Their passion for their own heritage is embodied in their fashion and mannerisms. The city’s temples are not mere mausoleums to something long gone, but are living, breathing monuments to the spirit of the city that is Kyoto. We will learn how to photograph humanity and life in the famed old streets of Kyoto. You will learn the most effective camera settings and techniques for capturing moments on the fly. We will also practice approaching people and asking them to pose for our cameras, in particular those wearing beautiful kimono, bright splashes of color and elegant patterns.

I was in Kyoto for 3 days and one of the afternoon was dedicated to a photoshoot with a Maiko (an apprentice training to be a Geisha). I had a good session as the Maiko was accommodating and just before the actual session Lukasz showed me some possible photo ideas. This was especially good because my time with the Maiko was limited. After looking at the photos I’ve taken, I wished the lighting was better. There are some unflattering shadows on her face despite her being only 18 years old. Overall the session was good.

You will never go wrong in choosing Satoshi. I booked a private photo session with him in Kyoto during the spring sakura season. Despite the bazillions number of tourists, he efficiently worked around it and took breath-taking pictures of me wearing a kimono without sacrificing the beauty of the surroundings. His work is far better than other private photographers I searched before finding him, and not to mention he is local to Kyoto and speaks excellent English. Booking with him, even at the last minute, went smoothly. Satoshi is an amicable person and very professional. He also informed me of the historical facts on places we passed by and recommended places to see while in Kyoto without interrupting the session's amount of time. He went above and beyond my expectations. It's been my dream and one of my bucket lists to be professionally photographed surrounded by cherry blossoms. Thank you, Satoshi, for helping me make my dream come true.

Wow! If you’re on the fence about booking this experience, I strongly recommend it! I was a part of a group of 3 who visited Daiki’s tea cafe and hiked to his plot of land. Only one of the three of us was really a tea connoisseur, but we all really enjoyed ourselves. Learning about Daiki’s story as well how green tea is produced from the farm to the cafe was really amazing. Do be sure to wear good hiking shoes, as the hike to Daiki’s plot is fairly steep and in a bit of rain it can become quite slippery. However, the view at the top is breathtaking and the cold-brewed green tea was the perfect to enjoy after the hike. The hospitality of him and his staff at the cafe is unparalleled. If you chose to have some lunch at the cafe after the hike (which you should), we recommend the ten-cha tan tan noodles or the pasta with sencha. These two dishes are some of the best food we had in Japan and cannot be found anywhere else! This experience is truly a must if you are in the area!

What’s the Story? The Vermillion gates of Shinto, adorned with holy symbols, lead us up the forested mountainside. Deep in the cover of night we enter a sacred garden brimming with mysteries veiled in a ghostly atmosphere. But fear not—we will cast our artificial light into the darkness and illuminate the beauty of the Fushimi Inari Shrine. What We’ll Shoot Learn the secrets of light painting in a setting ripe with potential. We will use a variety of artificial lights to reveal the shrine’s details in the dark. You’ll get coached on the best camera settings for light painting but also on the subtle handling of light sources to create impressive images. Where We’ll Explore We will go to Fushimi Inari, the most visited shine in Japan, after sunset when all the tourists have gone home. We will hit the iconic ‘tunnel of torii gates’ of course, but also hidden sub-shrines peppering the mountainside. We will climb a short way up the mountain into spooky and otherworldly parts of the shrine grounds.
