The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside. Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or "ascending dragon," but it hasn't forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.

After one month traveling in Vietnam, I finally found the right person to help me to prepare the visit in Hanoi. He helped with general information about Hanoi and surroundings, buses, planes, timetables, etc. I had Tinny’s telephone and could contact him for any request or info. Even when I had some visa problems at the border he helped me. He is such a profesional, sweet, educated, and because he loves what he does, he is doing a great job with the tourists. Thank you for your help, Tinny. I hope we will meet again.

While opportunities to actually get out and take photos are extremely limited right now in my location I decided to sign up for a portfolio review session with Vietnam in Focus. Street and travel photography aren't my main style so I was looking to learn from my previous attempts. I booked a 90 minute session which was conducted via video call. The session went smoothly. Boris, my reviewer, had spent some time looking over my images prior to the session so the discussion was constructive from the off. I wasn't sure what to expect but the discussion was really in-depth. We covered a wide range of topics that gave me things to think about both while out with my camera and in post processing; such as colour harmony, framing, context, creating elements of a story, the subject and use of negative space. It was a rewarding session and something I would definitely think about doing again as a way to keep improving.

I travelled to Hanoi alone and Momentlives kindly allowed me to go solo on a combined rice paper village and incense in one day. Mike replied all my emails promptly and gave his suggestions which are both professional and very helpful. Finally we decided to go to the rice paper village in the morning and the incense village in the afternoon. The incense village workers would be gathering the incense sticks in the afternoon and it would be just as good as morning. I was greeted on the day by a local guide and a driver. The local guide (sorry I forgot his name :p) spoke good English, kindly stopped and bought me breakfast because I forgot to pack a breakfast with me, and took me to the village. He is very passionate about photography. He showed me various interesting spots in the village where you can get really good shots, read the light and the scene, and being able to communicate with the locals, he spoke to the locals so they won't feel awkward having a foreigner sticking a camera in their faces or being in their premises, which is always a great help and something I could not achieve by going there on my own :p I was driven back to the hotel, had lunch on my own, and set off for the incense village in the afternoon. We got to this one incense village workshop where a number of workers were hard at work doing various tasks. My guide made the right decision of sticking to this workshop and waited - the golden hour came and it was beautiful. I would definitely recommend Momentlives to any photographers regardless of which level they are at.

Had an amazing time at the street food tour conducted by Little Tea. The guide was a young college girl Hannah who was very polite and suave. She took us around Little District of Hanoi where we tasted Banh My, Beef in Papaya salad, various preparations of noodles, dessert and egg coffee. She knew her way around the small alleys of Hanoi.Would definitely recommend it

Chose this tour company thru my canadian travel agent. Excellent choice. It was a private tour. Our guide, our driver my husband and I. It was a good choice considering the covid 19 epidemic. From beginning to abrupt end of our tour we had excellent knowledgeable guides and top drawer accommadations. The tours were well planned and gave us a good understanding of their homeland and what made them proud. We had time to investigate things on our own as well. Unfortunately we had to leave one week early but plan to return one day. We would not hesitate using this company again. We are in our 60's and our activities met our abilities. Felt safe and well informed with necessary changes. We were given a refund for places we were unable to go to

We were on our last day in Hanoi and this tour was exceptional. The information was told in wonderful way by the greatest guy ever - Tung. He told me that his grandfather used to fight in the Vietnam War, so he knew a lot of interesting stories that no one could tell. Love this!

Photograph ‘train street’ away from the tourists We were the first tour company ever to bring guests to Hanoi’s now famous ‘train street’. Back in 2012, we’d just encounter the locals who lived alongside the tracks, and of course the trains that rumbled through every once in a while. Our little tour made such a splash that we ended up talking about it on Discovery and the Travel Channel, and some of our guests even had their pictures published in international media. Now, of course, peak times find this special little corner of Hanoi crammed with foreign travellers, and most of the local homes have been converted into cafes and bars. In October 2019, the city government decided to close off that ‘train street’ to visitors. As luck would have it, we were already developing a new Hanoi On the Tracks tour, in a different part of the city. Now you can experience the real local atmosphere of life along Hanoi’s railway, without all the tourist cafes and instagrammers. And yes, you’ll still get to shoot the train rolling between the houses! You’ll also explore markets, lakes, parks full of people exercising, and try some delicious street food while following the tracks. Along the way, you’ll learn how to create a photographic story using different types of image and how to manipulate the settings on your camera depending on the kind of picture you want to take, the light, and how fast your subject (ie the train) is moving. Just please keep the actual locations to yourself – we need to keep this one quieter than the last! The tour runs from 5:30 to 9:30am beginning near Hanoi Railway Station. The price includes pick-up from your hotel, starting at 5am.
