Shan State (Burmese: ရှမ်းပြည်နယ်, pronounced [ʃáɴ pjìnɛ̀]; Shan: မိူင်းတႆး [mə́ŋ.táj]) is a state of Myanmar. Shan State borders China to the north, Laos to the east, and Thailand to the south, and five administrative divisions of Burma in the west. Largest of the 14 administrative divisions by land area, Shan State covers 155,800 km², almost a quarter of the total area of Burma. The state gets its name from the Shan people, one of several ethnic groups that inhabit the area. Shan State is largely rural, with only three cities of significant size: Lashio, Kengtung, and the capital, Taunggyi. Taunggyi is 150.7 km north east of the nation's capital Naypyitaw.

Nestled between the mountains of the southern Shan State lies one of Myanmar's top destinations, spectacular Inle Lake, in the Southern Shan Hills, with the scenery providing stunning panoramic views. Flying over stilted villages, leg-rowing fishermen, floating gardens and layered mountains as a backdrop, Inle Lake is probably the most extraordinary place in the world to fly in a hot air balloon.

One of the beautiful ways to experience one of Myanmar’s most scenic and cultural attractions. Local Inthar fishermen looking for the first catch of the day and boats laden full of produce on their way to the market through a maze of green floating canals. Breakfast is taken next to one of the beautiful Shan villages wherever we land.

Yu Mon & Phyo are a young married local couple who offer guided hillside trekking tours out of Kalaw. They previously worked for one of the largest trekking companies in the area so they have lots of experience to offer their guests. They decided to venture out on their own so that they could offer a more personalized, authentic experience to travelers. Their treks go through a less-travelled route which include spectacular mountain views, hillside local villages, rice paddy fields and waterfalls. You are unlikely to encounter many other tourists on your route with Yu Mon & Phyo. They offer 1 day treks around Kalaw and 2 and 3 day overnight treks from the Kalaw area to Inle Lake. Come join Yu Mon and Phyo for an authentic local experience!
