Although I do plan to walk the entire length of the path I have walked along many sections at various times. Most recently I walked circular routes from Harting, Fulking, Pyecombe, Upper Beeding in West Sussex as well as from Wilmington, Alciston and Firle in East Sussex. All sections have provided climbs up to spectacular views both South towards the sea and North across the Weald. Whichever section you choose you will experience some taxing climbs from sea level in the river valleys and some great viewpoints. It can be a cheap day out if you find a sensible place to leave your car and avoid some of the busy official car parks. Public transport to various jump off points is possible but a little limited in some sections.

Southdown Gliding Club is located in a beautiful part of Sussex adjacent to the South Downs National Park and is principally a club for paid-up members who are experienced glider pilots or are training to get their glider pilots licence. The club also offers trial lessons and one-day courses to those thinking about gliding as a sport or leisure activity, or just as an experience to remember for the rest of their lives. It is a well-established club and was founded in the early days of aviation (1930).The club owns its own airfield and a fleet of 3 x 2-seater training gliders, plus 3 x single-seater gliders. We also have 3 x tug aircraft for towing gliders into the air. We also use a winch for a similar purposes. The club also has around 50 privately-owned gliders based at the airfield. Contact the club if you want to book a trial lesson or course, or even buy a voucher as an unforgettable present for someone. The club has a clubhouse and briefing facilities for its members which can be used by members of the public with permission or invite.Members of the public are welcome to visit the club and watch gliding activities providing they park in the designated area, and do not wander onto the airfield or go near aircraft unless accompanied by a club member.
We went down on a lovely late Summer, early Autumn day for a gliding experience with one of the pilots/instructors there. Arrived at the newly-refurbished clubhouse with good facilities and a warm welcome from the members around the airfield. I took my young children along as there was freedom to roam around a little (caution needed near the airfield!) and they had a lovely time seeing the comings and goings of the gliders and 'planes. There are different gliders to see - some very old , which we were fortunate to see out of the hangar, brought out as it was such a perfect day for gliding. The flight itself was enjoyable with my pilot Owen giving me excellent commentary and briefing throughout, from pre-flight all the way through. It's a lovely location in the countryside , which can be followed up with a pub lunch at any of the country pubs in a few mile radius. A thoroughly enjoyable day out!

Knepp - one of the largest re-wilding projects in lowland Europe. Encounter herds of wild ponies, cattle, deer and pigs as they roam 3,500 acres of Sussex, driving the forces of habitat regeneration. Join us on one of our vehicle-based safaris or guided walking tours and experience our profusion of birds, mammals, butterflies, beetles, reptiles, plants and fungi in a setting that feels as wild and dynamic as the African bush. Stay in one of our beautiful shepherd's huts or luxurious tents, or simply pitch your own in our exclusive Wildland campsite. You don't have to take one of our safaris to stay here, and you don't have to stay here to take a safari - though naturally we hope you'll be tempted to combine the two.
