Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) is no longer the capital of Myanmar, but it has experienced a huge increase in tourism recently. Book early, as hotel rooms are sometimes hard to find! While you’re in town, the Shwedagon Pagoda, an immense, ancient Buddhist shrine, is a must-see—TripAdvisor travelers recommend visiting at sunrise or sunset.

Secrets and rendezvous that these teak lined walls have witnessed inside the Sarkies Bar surely made their way into a classic tale of the Far East. Our legendary lounge continues to make memories, still the place to be in this city, sipping a Strand Sour or unwinding at the billiard table.
This is a great historic watering hole and offers a glimpse of old Rangoon and its even good value ! Loved the pool table

I visited for 9 days recently. It was very very hot. At times it reached 40 degrees. What a city though. It’s massive and not really a walking city however you can get taxis ten a penny to wherever you want to go and walk about in each area. Taxis are dirt cheap, just ask price before you get in and knock of a thousand and get in, or don’t bother as they are that cheap. A forty minute taxi ride will cost between 4 and 7 thousand kyats which is between £2/ £3.50 , we never ever paid any more and we were in them constantly. Buses are even cheaper , but why bother when taxis are everywhere. Here is some Must visits. The Shwedegon pagoda. It’s free for Locals but you will be charged about a £5.00 . You will not be allowed in with shorts so men would need to buy a longgine ( skirt ) they cost about £3.00. What a sight it is though. A must visit. Another is downtown area, just get taxi to the Sule Pegoda or junction city mall and walk about all the cramped streets. It’s great and a step back in time. Food is a hit and miss, the local food especially meat is disgusting, but there is plenty of western places to eat. Mostly in hotels and malls , where you pay more but not that much more. There is the Myanmar plaza also worth a visit, they have a nice park across the road that looks onto a lake, it’s very popular with families at night to watch the sunset. Everywhere you go however is an experience and you see different things all the time. In one day, I seen elephants on the road, a Thai wedding, the graves of British soldiers. A movie been made, and people carrying everything for 200 chickens to a family of five on a moped. What a place. The whole of Yangon is an amazing experience. I loved it and loved the people even more. Word of warning, crossing the road is a hair raising experience, please be careful. Also the driving is metal to say the least, but just go with the flow. This country will change greatly over the next five years. Go now before the west totally sabotage it.
