One of the largest districts listed with the National Register of Historical Places.
We live local and continue to marvel at the beautiful houses in the Historic District. As it often happens, we take the area for granted, and should probably do a walking tour instead of the drive-by. I've been told that Wilmington was one of few cities that didn't burn during the Civil War, and it shows. The homes are beautiful and the owners do a great job of keeping them up. The area has been gentrifying for several years and will continue to do so as Wilmington becomes more popular as a place to live, work, and retire. To be fair, a few blocks away from the Historic District that has not been renovated has some sketchy neighborhoods, so just beware.

not a welcoming location I was only happy when i saw the old Krispy Kreme shop and memories of my youth came flooding back.

We picked up a brochure at the visitor's center downtown and walked the short distance to this area. It was a gorgeous day and we enjoyed seeing the different styles of architecture and reading the short history of each house.

Great place to park your car and get out to walk and shop or eat or just look in the windows as you walk and go down to the park.

We have always loved shopping here - especially for the Duck Donuts. Lots of different shops, good prices, friendly people. Easy to find. Lots of parking.

As an Asheville resident, I like to go to the Drum Circle as often as possible. It's in a central downtown location (parking is the challenge). You can hear it from a distance. You can participate or not. You can dance or not. It's free. It's moving. And I think it's something every visitor to Asheville owes it to her/himself to experience. Find a stable, comfortable spot, close your eyes and just let the rhythms move through you, around you, within you. Be smart, though.

Nicely landscaped with clean public restrooms right off of the main shopping area. There is a garden with a water feature and sculptures and a large metal rocking chair for that perfect photo opportunity of the kids or a loved one. The square sits adjacent to one of the many free public parking lots and is an easy walk to shops and restaurants.
