When you think “adventure travel” you probably think of far-flung places like Belize and Alaska—not Wisconsin. But if you’re an outdoor adventurer, you’ll find plenty of places to explore in Wisconsin. A vacation in Wisconsin can put you close to the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which has excellent biking trails. Or choose Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands—kayakers will love exploring Lake Superior’s many caves and shipwrecks.

Packers fans don’t wear those cheese-wedge hats for nothing! Foodies will love tasting as many of Wisconsin’s artisanal cheeses as possible. Either drive from cheesemaker to cheesemaker, or choose a Wisconsin vacation in a town with a good farmers’ market—then the cheesemakers bring their wares to you. And what goes better with artisanal cheese than craft beer? In Milwaukee, visit the Lakefront and Sprecher Breweries for tours and tastings.

Wisconsin Dells is a classic family vacation destination. A vacation in Wisconsin Dells will put you close to all the excitement—you’ll have to tear the kids away from the theme parks, wave pools and water parks in Wisconsin Dells!

Lake Geneva boasts clean beaches, golf, and a small-town feel that definitely appeals to city dwellers—it’s a popular getaway for residents of Chicago.

What a beautiful place. Majority of this location has easy walking trails with beautiful views. Our two year old walked most of the way by himself. The hardest part of the “hike” is the steps down to the water. Which you wouldn’t necessarily have to do. You could take a stroller or wheelchair through most of and just skip going down to the water. However I highly suggest taking the journey to the water. It’s beautiful. There are also nice benches throughout the trails to take a break if needed.

LondonDairy Alpacas

LondonDairy Alpacas has been in business for more than two decades on a ranch that has been family owned for four generations. Approximately 50 alpacas make their residence here. We feature one-hour guided interactive, educational tours for all ages; the young and the young at heart for a fee. Reservations MUST be made in advance, preferably at least 24 hours. We can accommodate large groups, bus groups, scouts, family reunions, 4-H clubs, school groups, and visiting tourists. Our gift and South American wine store is located in the former bottling plant which was built during the 1940's. We offer a wide range of alpaca products from yarn to roving, finished products such as sweaters, hats, mittens, gloves, socks, collectible bears and figurines. Alpaca fiber is 3x warmer than sheep wool and 7x stronger. It is hypoallergenic and has natural thermal and wicking properties.

On a cool summer day, we decided to visit the Alpaca farm - called for an appointment (tour) and settled on a time. On arrival, we were greeted by Laura (retired High School Special Ed teacher) - oh my gosh - this lady talked for over an hour without benefit of notes or a teleprompter and to say that she really, really knows alpacas is an understatement. She covered the history of how and why alpacas came to the US and how they adapted to our environment versus that of Peru. We were provided with an opportunity to pretend to be "inspectors" of recently sheared "fiber" (don't call it fleece or wool) - after much instruction we were told to sort the various offerings into "grades" - 5 choices - from best to worst. Just like a teacher - we were set up for failure. We only got 2 of the 5 correct and were advised not to surrender our day jobs. .. Kevin Stoer (the owner) has a gorgeous, immaculate farm and his prize winning alpacas are evidenced by the overwhelming number of Blue Ribbons achieved in competitions globally. We were afforded an opportunity to feed several of the males which delighted us all. The gift store is still a work-in-process, but there were several really good buys and some extremely interesting uses for the alpaca fiber. Worth the visit and then some - we'll be going back again next year on our Door County tour. By the way - find out how Kevin protects his alpacas from predators - an extremely unique approach to alarm systems. P.S. Considering the $6 tour fee - this is a steal and well worth the time and effort.

Ferry Bluff State Natural Area

Ferry Bluff is a gem many times overlooked by tourists in the area of Sauk City due to lack of information. After a short and not too difficult hike (0.8 mile) through a beautiful forest it offers a breathtaking view of Wisconsin river. I am a tourist who visited recently this place but could not find information I needed on TripAdvisor. I recommend including this attraction in the listing.

There are quite a few bluffs on the Mississippi River on Wisconsin side, where one can enjoy magnificent views of the river. Not so on Wisconsin River. While you will see many a bluff along the river if you're boating down the stream, most of them are apparently in private hands, Ferry Bluff is one of the very few elevated places with the Wisconsin River view. So visit this pleasant exception and enjoy the view! On top of that (pun intended) the Bluff is a roosting area for Bald Eagles, and the access is closed part of the year when eagles roost. This adds to the overall appeal of the place.

I love to walk the dog here and he loves it too. One suggestion I have is more garbage cans for dog waste. The variety of scenery is excellent.

The 1,200-acre grounds are home to protected prairies, woodlands, wetlands, savannas, springs, shoreline, a notable horticultural collection, and Wisconsin native plant gardens. It also offers 20 miles of walking trails and 4 miles of biking road as well as hundreds of learning and volunteer opportunities. The Arboretum is located between Lake Wingra and the West Beltline Highway. The main entrance is at 1207 Seminole Highway. The Visitor Center is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekends from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Arboretum admission is free.

This arboretum is huge with lots of blue birds, wild turkeys and even deer! Every season is great with all the color and scents you expect. There are plenty of ponds, hiking trails and the visitor center is very helpful. Depending on the season you pick, you can spend hours here exploring. I especially enjoyed the board walk and the bird watching. Admission and parking is free, however it does get limited on the weekends sometimes. Bring your hiking shoes, your walking stick, your camera and enjoy the outdoors!

Kettle Moraine State Forest

Split into two "units" south and north of Milwaukee, both sections contain part of the Ice Age Trail, a 1,000-mile trail throughout Wisconsin.

Paradise Springs is an extremely easy hike/walk. You would be able to take a stroller or wheel chair and see almost everything. A must see if you go to Kettle Moriane . We went during the start of the Covid-19 outbreak. They had the drinking fountains and restrooms closed for safety precautions. Was nice to see it taken seriously but still able to enjoy the outdoors.
