Poor Knights Island Marine Reserve

World-renowned diver Jacques-Yves Cousteau rated this reserve, notable for its excellent visibility, as one of the top ten places to dive in the world.

Great experience! Wide variety of fish, they’re not scared at all, rather inquisitive. Good visibility. Water colder than expected, even in summer so remember full wet suits!

Easy to walk around and take in all that happens around this little harbour. Rather busy, but still a relaxed place with lots of boats coming and going.Sometimes you can see the cruise ship's anchored of shore.

Tutukaka Headland

Reviewed By Sus1952 - Palmerston North, New Zealand

I was apprehensive about walking to the lighthouse having read reviews that told of how sections of the path were difficult, as I have some agility issues. Of course you have to attempt the walk as close to low tide as possible which we did. There are lots of steps down to the beach joining the island to the mainland. Then there was a steep climb up to the lighthouse. I took two walking poles and had on trail running shoes which have a good grip. The paths were very dry when we walked the track so this also helped. The view from the lighthouse was truly amazing and well worth all the effort. You can see across to the Poor Knights and beyond, and to the bays below the headland.

Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre

This centre, run by voluntary donation, was started and continues to be run by Robert Webb and his wife to rehabilitate all injured birds where possible. For the minimal fee of $10 per person, you can have the opportunity to see and be pictured with the Centre’s resident Kiwi Bird, Sparky the one legged Kiwi. Bob over delivered. Along with seeing Sparky search for worms, and a detailed session about the Kiwi protection program and the centre, we say two 5 day old chicks hatched at the centre. Sparky has become the resident “Kiwi Educator” and spends this time meeting guests such as ourselves and flying around New Zealand with Bob to educate and encourage citizens to do all they can to preserve this endangered and adorable creature. It was an inspiration to witness such a caring and dedicated individual as Bob and see the difference that he and countless have made.

Waipu Cave

Reviewed By watts2311

Absolutely loved this experience. I was recommended to go here by a local and I’m so glad I did it. Drive down gravel road for 10 mins, Fairly big car park with a public toilet & free overnight camping option for self contained. Enter through the cave as seen in the picture, walk across the stream to the left and follow it through. Quite an easy walk through the cave, don’t have to go too far to see the glow worms. highly recommend taking a head torch for ease, if not I used my phone light, worked fine to see where I was stepping. I wore wellies and friends wore trainers - wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet as you walk through about 2/3 streams inside to cross over. Shortly after us there was a guided group going through about 1pm so made us feel at ease that we weren’t alone and going along the right track. 100% do this!!
