Wicklow (Irish: Cill Mhantáin, meaning "church of the toothless one") is the county town of County Wicklow and the capital of the Mid-East Region in Ireland. Located south of Dublin on the east coast of the island, it has a population of 10,584 according to the 2016 census. The town is to the east of the N11 route between Dublin and Wexford. Wicklow is also linked to the rail network, with Dublin commuter services now extending to the town. Additional services connect with Arklow, Wexford and Rosslare Europort, a main ferry port. There is also a commercial port, mainly importing timber and textiles. The River Vartry is the main river which flows through the town.

This area of Ireland is not to be missed. Very different from anything else we saw. If you start in Roundwood and take highway R759 you will go through some amazing countryside. Stop near Lough Tay and find the trailhead. (There are a few parking areas). You can take a spectacular hike on a beautifully maintained trail (much of which is raised boardwalk) and see amazing views in every direction. Then, drive towards Sally Gap. It's hauntingly beautiful and unique. So worthwhile. You can continue on to Dublin from there. Country roads (narrow) but typical of those in Ireland.

Stunning setting for a walk..advise to be there first thing in the morning and set off walking when its lovely and quiet. We walked up through the old mines first which is an easier route to take for the more leisurely walkers.

Did a glendalough walk with my husband from the visitor centre to the upper lake. Glendalough is beautiful, peaceful and tranquil, Beautiful meandering walkways passeing through the monastic city, forests and the lower lake. Enjoyed the amazing views of the upper lake over a picnic lunch. A must see, highly recommended.
