Access to Lonely Bay is a few minutes drive up Purangi Road from Cooks Beach settlement and then turn off onto an unsealed road signposted for Shakespeare Cliff. As you drive up here there is a turn-off to the right for the Lonely Bay car park. It’s worth driving or walking up to the Cliff lookout too as the views are very good, including one overlooking Lonely Bay. Lonely Bay is surrounded by cliffs but fortunately a stairway was constructed in 2005 to make it easy to get to the beach. There are quite a few steps but they have been designed in a pattern to make it easier to go up and down and it’s certainly worth the 5 to 10 minute effort! The beach is an unspoilt sandy cove with dramatic white cliffs towering overhead (literally in some cases) and some great limestone rock formations on the shore itself. There is plenty of woodland as a backdrop and shade including some huge pohutukawa trees which presumably are spectacular in season. We had a look around and took photos however had we been prepared it would have been a great spot to sit down and have a picnic and a swim. There were at most a half dozen others on the beach during our visit so the lonely aspect may be surprisingly true for such a scenic place. We preferred this beach to the one at Cooks Beach itself, although visitors to the area are spoilt for choice with Hahei, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach all within a short drive away. No facilitlies available so take what you need if you plan to spend some time here. A towel, a book, some food & drink and a camera would be my suggestion.

Had a great time at Mill Creek, heaps of animals and birds to see and a great little playground a and picnic area as well! The staff were super friendly and attentive even while they were busy trying to fix damage from previous floods. We will definitely come back next time we are in Coromandel

The views of the bay are amazing from the lookout at the top and there are a few signs explaining a bit of the history of the area and the names of the islands in the bay. There is also a separate viewing area for Lonely Bay. There is parking available at the top and it is a short walk to the lookout from the car park, if you are walking it is a bit steep on the the way up.

The staff were very helpful and the bikes were fantastic. Very good quality for hire bikes. We took hard tails because that’s what we were used to and they let us try them first for fit and suitability. Electric bikes are of course more expensive but looked good. We did half a day because we only had that time but we got to zone 5 in that time. The trails are in zones and there are hundreds of possible routes all graded. They have a very helpful map which is a must and easy to follow. The forest is vast. This really was an exciting biking day as I said in New Zealand forests and hills. Excellent time spent.

This beach is lovely and a favourite of ours when in Whitianga. Good reasonable swimming in summer, quite popular with travellers and locals. We often stay at one end of the beach at a Freedom Camping site in our motorhome. Lovely spot.

So many pigs in all different sizes & colours! & super cute baby piglets. You will find Stu's wild pigs before "the waterworks" on 309 Rd, if travelling from Coromandel Town end. Must see for all ages! ????????????????????????

Such beautiful views went on a nice sunny day and thought it was a very easy walk I'm a kiwi and personally found it very easy to walk and I was wearing jandals my two and a half year old also enjoyed the walk went all the way to the top holding out hands for some parts definitely wouldn't go up there in wet weather and do be careful around back bay as it's fairly slippery and some of the steps up and down need some repairing other than that loved it was a great family friendly walk wonderful place to take a picnic and sit up on the hill overlooking the amazing views ????
