Encompassing two of the Netherlands’ three largest cities (Rotterdam and The Hague), Zuid-Holland (South Holland) is also home to important towns like Leiden, Gouda and Delft. And many lovely smaller towns dot the gorgeous green landscape. Alphen aan den Rijn has several interesting attractions, including Dutch history theme park Archeon. Picturesque Kinderdijk, birthplace of the legend of the Cat and the Cradle, also has many windmills that together are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Keukenhof is the independent, international showcase for the Dutch floricultural sector, with a special emphasis on flower bulbs. In the space of 8 weeks Keukenhof demonstrates what the Dutch floricultural sector has to offer. The focus in the park is on the 7 million spring flowering bulbs. 100 flower bulb companies display their products and 500 growers present an enormous variety of cut flowers and pot plants at more than 20 flower shows.
Even though the tulips blooming season is very fickle due to the weather, lots of other type of flowers inside large building. Cafes are available for indoor and outdoor seating. You could spend a half day easily strolling through the large, 80 acres, of paths, ponds and indoor pavilions full of flowers and the famous tulip fields (when in bloom.) If you go, arrive in the morning before the crowds.

Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum is the green pearl in the city of Rotterdam. Throughout the year admiring visitors come and enjoy exploring the gardens. Nature’s beauty changes magically with each new season. This former country estate covers 20 acres and boasts a magnificent collection of plants that includes very old beeches and oaks, 700 varieties of rhododendron, more than 100 varieties of holly, the Dutch National Collection of Hostas and countless others. Refreshments can be had on the sunny terrace at the entrance or in the cosy tea room in De Uithoek where they also serve lunch.
This is also Rotterdam! A beautiful and well maintained botanical paradise. It is accessible in a wheelchair and plenty of resting places. The tea room has a great menu and the food is surprisingly diverse and very good. The cakes are delicious!

We had a great time in this Zoo. We spend over 4 hours and didn't get to see it all. Naturally everyone has its favorites. We liked the gorillas that where inside with the warm weather and the hyenas chewing on bones. We went to see the feeding of the sharks and the tigers. Probably we, and most visitors, expected too much of it as the animals got bored soon so there was not much to see. Great lay out by continent so you have a great mix of different species (birds, mammals,...) in every continent. The food in the restaurant are typical dutch fast food options. I tried a 'broodje kroket' that really missed taste, with or without the accompanying sauce. Broodje Unox (hot dog) had the same problem. Perhaps best to take a picknick with you. Great bakeries (like Koekela) in Rotterdam. We came with an Uber from the centre for 7 euro which is cheaper than the 3,50 euro/person for a two hour ticket for the bus as you will take longer than two hours in the Zoo. Probably the same with a taxi.

Loved the canals in this city especially when the sky is blue which created beautiful reflections in the river. Great to take your time strolling along the canal and take some good pics.

Open usually in May and two weeks in October, the Japanese garden receives more and more visitors each year. Photography and theme photo shoot lovers can't miss the garden in blossom. It's a modest size garden, well curated and looked after. Weekdays visit may be better as on a weekend the place is too busy to have any pleasurable impression and idea of the garden the essence of which- to rejoice with nature in harmony, solitude and silence.

Bollenstreek.nl knows everything about the flower fields in Holland and the possibilities to discover the flower fields near Keukenhof on you own or with a sightseeing flower tour. We know where the best blooming flower fields are and you might even get in touch with a flower farmer.
We decided to see more incredible flower fields so we took a 35 minute train ride from The Hague to Hillegom. As we approached Hillegom on the train the fields were spectacular vivid colors of orange, yellow, purple, and reds. There was a small sign pointing to Hillegom Center. We walked over 1 km but never found the town center, nor did we find bicycles to rent or any information how to best explore the vast distances by foot. I checked Uber and in 3 minutes a wonderful driver Goran picked us up. He spoke perfect English, is delightful and he drove us around to the amazingly beautiful tulip fields stopping everywhere. We made many stops, got out of the car to absorb the magic and took dozens of photos. Absolutely had a great 50 minute “tour” with Goran. He then dropped us off back to the train station and then we visited lovely Leiden.

Every big city has a park and like any other city Rotterdam has its own city park called "Het Park" In the spring/ summer season you will see a lot of people having a picknick or just lay down on the grass to enjoy the moment While in the fall/ winter time you see many people walking in the park with or without their dog(s) to get a breath of fresh air A good place to escape the city buzz and go back to nature ???? Fantastic place for couples, families, disabled people are also catered for with a man made wheelchair friendly ramp down to the sea, loads of eateries, bars and a few shops. The beach is like caster sugar, when you come off the ferry from u.k. or whilst waiting for ferry to the u.k.or like we do arrive early on the beach for the day, have a lovely evening meal on the beach, then head off 5min drive to ferry, shower on the ship, wake up refreshed as you arrive in the u.k. in the morning.
