Lake Titicaca

This is the world's largest navigable lake to large vessels, which lies more than 12,500 feet above sea level and covers 3,200 square miles in the Andes Mountains between the border of Peru to the west and Bolivia to the east.

It is a long way to Peru and it takes some time to get here, but the long ride to the lake is one of the many "high points" of your trip to Peru. The reward is to experience the lake, and the people that live on it. The beauty is just hard to describe: crystal clear water, mountain views, small islands, the floating islands, the exhilarating boat ride and the talented people making a living on the lake. We have heard great things about this trip from traveling friends, but none of them prepare you for it. This meets all the requirements for "bucket list " status--you will not be disappointed. The views of it from the hotel room were nothing short of spectacular, but it gets even better when you are on the lake and have a wonderful 36o view--everywhere you look is special. As an aside, I strongly recommend that you stay at GHL Hotel Lago Titicaca. It is a wonderful property on all measures of a great hotel--a total surprise for us!

Taquile Island

Located approximately 25 kilometers from the shore of Lake Titicaca, this scenic island is known for its friendly inhabitants, clear blue lake waters and distant snow-capped mountains.

I felt like at Uros every thing the locals say has been rehearsed before, some of their jokes were just for the tourists and it made me rather sad than laugh. From the uros islands, we took a 2 hour boat ride until getting to the Taquile island. From there we walked to the main square (you can definitely feel the altitude during the walk so take it easy), where you have a traditional lunch (fresh fish, french fries, rice, some vegetables). From there you can walk around a little and continue to where the boat picks you up. The circuit offers spectacular views of the lake, and you can see all the view to Bolivia. Probably one of the best things to do when in Puno, the views are impressive.

Amantani Island

Reviewed By _I30LW

Amantani independently I followed one of the posts here from six years ago and did amantani independently. As you do it without an agency you're money goes straight to the hosting family. Also don't forget to bring some things for the family - fruits /rice/spices /things for children (PLEASE Don't bring sweets, dental care is a problem over there). So the procedure is cery easy - just go to the port to the office called amantani Pay about 30 soles. Embark at 8 am. You will get to uro (half an hour sailing) for and hour (for eight soles you could take the Reed boat there) After an hour in the Uros you'll embark to amantani (about 2 hours, prepare for a long boat ride). The boats are very comfortable and it's a good idea to climb to he roof and get some sun. I'm Amantani the captain will partner you to a family. (mine was Serafina, very nice old lady!) The price for the home stay today in 2019 - 50 soles. (includes lunch dinner and breakfast. You'll eat lunch and go to look around pachatata and pachamama (you'll have an awesome view! look for the mountains of Bolivia!) AN IMPORTANT TIP: I planned on return after dark so I pinned the house in Google maps. (also the hosts give you their name on paper so the residents could give you directions). I traveled a bit around the island and got back after dark. The sight of the building storm and lightnings in Bolivia was something to behold from the darkness of amantani. (there is no lighting on the island so bring a lamp with you) Ate a nice dinner and then - sleep time. (p.s no phone chargers, bring a power bank!) IMPORTANT NOTICE: if you do it without an agency you won't go to the dancing. (I asked my hosts and they said that it's in the other side of the island, around hour walking, so I just didn't do it) Wake up 6:30 for breakfast, 7:30 on the boat again. After an hour arrive to Taquile Island. You have three hours to look around, not that much to see (there are some ruins though, and the men weave there which is cool). Recommendation: if you're not hungry just buy a bit of food in the island and wait with lunch till you get back to puño. In 11:30 embark, and around 14:30 get back to puño. Get ready for a long sailing. Summery: amantani is by far the most authentic and nice island. If you have some basic Spanish, don't afraid to go solo and and get hosted by locals! For any question, pm me.

La Raya Pass

Reviewed By 135robinp - Sydney, Australia

La Raya is a mountain range in the Andes (snow could be seen on the mountain peaks in the distance), located on the border of Puno and Cusco County in the middle of nowhere! and is the backdrop to a train stop where the Association of Artisans who congregate in this remote area with all their many wares so that passengers can make purchases. Set amid the incredible mountain scenery, it was something different. The clothing, alpaca woollen jumpers, cardigans, coats, scarves etc were well made and incredible value (US$20 for an alpaca wool jumper). Beware however, the altitude here is 4,319m and I did get a headache.
