The 10 Best Nature & Parks in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

August 10, 2021 Nicolette Lion

Budget-minded travelers will appreciate Phnom Penh's reasonably priced hotel rooms (several top-rated hotels on TripAdvisor offer rooms around $40/night). Explore the city's temples, palaces, and the remnants of its French colonial history. Just outside the city, the The Killing Fields (Choeung Ek) are a reminder of Cambodia's tragic past-- a somber contrast to the booming city of today.

We did a little searching on TripAdvisor, and his name came up several times. Someone had provided his contact information, although it was somewhat dated, but we decided to try it anyway and he responded in a few minutes. It was late afternoon or early evening when we contacted him, but he quickly agreed to take us the following morning. He was already waiting outside our hotel when we went down to meet him the next day. We had a wonderful day at Silk Island with him. He was very familiar with the area and had a few personal contacts of his own there. He charged us $30 for the entire trip, but we felt he was worth more than that, and paid him accordingly. We actually decided to have him take us again the nexxt day to the Killing Fields and Genocide Museum. He works very hard to provide a good life and future for his family and we were happy to have had the opportunity to meet him. He is happy to answer any questions you may have, but doesn’t overwhelm you with constant narrative and information. He and his family have suffered greatly due to the Vietnam War and Khmer Genocide and it is obviously a painful memory for him, yet he freely speaks about it if asked.

Wat Botum Park

Reviewed By Jedai79 - Singapore, Singapore

Date of Visit : 14 Dec 2019 Entrance fee : free We visited this park because we walked from Hotel Emion to Silver Pagoda via a small lane as guided by Google Map, this small lane opened up to Wat Botum Park. As it was sunny, there were plenty of photographic opportunities. We only knew that there was a lunch-time closure for Royal Palace but was unaware that Silver Pagoda also had “lunchtime closure”. Thus, we spent more time at Wat Botum Park and also chanced upon a good restaurant called Mer Khmek which was located opposite Wat Botum Park during the lunchtime break of Silver Pagoda. The same night, we walked past this park and there were many locals dancing & exercising at this park.

It’s mainly a playground but the park is very nice to walk around. The park had the Cambodia-Vietnam friendship monument. It’s a well-kept Park and used by the locals as a meeting place. Very friendly, I didn’t feel unsafe whilst I was there.

Mekong Island - Koh Dach

Reviewed By kennethw748 - Oak Park, United States

If you want to experience rural Cambodia close to Phnom Penh, visiting Koh Dach Island is a great choice. You should have some means of transport as for me it was not favorable to walking as sights are spaced out. I rode a bike which was easy and provided the right pace. A 100 yards from the ferry, you have a fork in the road. The right goes to the silk project which is a nice, interesting working community of weaving demonstration. I engaged a student guide, a couple of dollars. The silk products, I found out later, are over priced. Buy on Koh Dach at 1/6th the price. The road on Koh Dach is well paved which makes for easy riding. The scenery is not spectacular, but pleasant and gives a good view of rural life. There are some interesting sights on Koh Dach, like a beautiful, unusual temple and attendant grounds. The main reason to go here is for the silk weaving which is produced in home shops. You need to be alert as the shops are not readily seen from the road. The work is beautiful and high quality. I wound up buying 7 amazing silk scarves from Athink who is on FB and has a wonderful inventory of various silk goods, scarves, runners, shawls, etc. You may want to bring something to carry purchases. I had a small backpack which worked well . Be aware that there are not many places to eat on the island, just a few local places along the road where you can buy packaged goods like Coke, candy bars, cookies, etc. Koh Dach is well worth a trip if you want to get out of the city.

Riverside Park

Reviewed By Muguncjb2015 - Chennai (Madras), India

After visiting Wat Ounalom temple/pagoda, walked across the road to enter Sisowath Quay and found this Riverside Park. Riverside park is located along the bank of Tonle Sap River and the park extends till the merging point of Tonle Sap River with Mekong River. This area is also the Sisowath Quay. Can see several people walk along in the walking strip provided. The maintenance of the park is good. When I visited around 11.00AM in the morning saw lot of tourists and local people visiting the park / quay. . After walking towards the end of the park/quay found myself in front of the Royal palace at about 300 metres distance. Between Riverside park/Sisowath Quay and Royal palace, another park, the Royal palace park is located.
