Oceanside is a seaside oasis of recreation and beautiful beaches. Centrally located between San Diego and Los Angeles, Oceanside is frequently referred to as “the hub of Southern California.” From here, it’s easy to access a variety of amusement parks and family activities such as Disneyland, Legoland, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo. If you’re looking to educate as well as entertain, you won’t be disappointed. Take your kids to visit Mission San Luis Rey. Founded in 1798, Mission San Luis is often called “The King of Missions” and includes picnic grounds and a gift shop in addition to a museum. Also check out the California Surf Museum or the Oceanside Museum of Art. With more than six miles of frontal beach roads, Oceanside allows you to jog, bike or skate to your heart’s content. Bike the San Luis Rey River Biking trail or take part in private o group surf lessons from a local surf school. Get your sea legs on and check out one of the many boat rental companies for a trip out to sea you won’t soon forget – go deep sea fishing, diving or whale watching. For the golf lover, Oceanside is a veritable paradise! With six courses in or near Oceanside, you’re sure to find a public or private course to fit your game - try Oceanside Municipal Golf Course, Emerald Isle Golf Course or Pendleton Marine Golf Course.

From Carlsbad Inn to the Oceanside Pier, the coastal rail trail makes its way along a protected stretch of roadway, some neighborhoods, and a formal, well marked trail. It's only about a 3 mile walk and there's always the train to take back if the round trip walk is too long. There are plans to extend the trail all the way to San Diego but that hasn't come to fruition at this time. Sometimes the wheels of progress turn slowly. Walking this trail and its environs really gives a good opportunity to stop and admire flowers, appreciate some of the local flavor, and create memories.

My husband and I rented a beach house in Oceanside. Wanting to explore our surroundings we took at walk on "The Strand". This is basically a street between the ocean and homes sitting on the ocean front. You can walk to the pier and beyond. The dead end becomes a set of apartments. The beach side of The Strand is several miles of beach, little food carts, bike and surrey rentals. There is the pier with Ruby's at the end. A park for kids, public bathrooms, tables with overhead cover. Then you have ocean front cottages, apartments, and townhouses. The flurry of activity is the fun stuff. Joggers, walkers, bikers, lowriders, classic cars to name the crowd. I found this place to be a hidden gem for an oceanfront beach house.

Come to the Harbor Village, eat at one of the many restaurants, walk the walkway all around and see the boats and then stop to observe the sea lions hanging out on the dock. The nearby beach is also lovely.

I love RV camping here with my (3 little) kids. Pros: The facilities are clean. The sites are large enough so that you’re not on top of other campers. Some of the sites back up to the trail which is great because you can go on walks through the beautiful foliage of San Diego. The rangers are friendly and helpful. There is a volleyball court, work out area, and kids play ground that are all in good working order and are located in shaded areas. It’s CHEAP. Cons: Our first visit was a little confusing, we arrived after check in time but were told to proceed to our site. We did, but when the ranger shift changed the next morning the new ranger told us we were a “no show” & needed to check in at the front and that we would have to pay a late fee? When we got to the station there was no late fee. It was all very confusing . But no harm done.. The park is public, so if that bothers you having people around on the trails and near your RV that are not from the RV park that could be an issue. It was not for us. All in all, we come here several times a year and truly love it. Best place to RV in North County by a long shot ????????

Blink and you'll miss the small sign and obscure entrance, but go back and visit the Buena Vista Audubon Center. Go early in the morning for the best bird-watching, and walk the nature trail ready to take pictures. Kids' activities in the summer, too!
