The 10 Best Nature & Parks in Johannesburg, Gauteng

August 8, 2021 Almeta Stockton

Johannesburg is the place to go to mix big-city culture, shopping, dining and nightlife with outdoor adventures, up-close wildlife encounters and visits to historical sites. Explore caves and nature reserves, or visit a traditional village by day, then enjoy dinner at a hip cafe or five-star restaurant. And if you're a shopper, bring an extra, empty suitcase. With malls, open-air markets and places that blend the two, you'll find plenty of unique souvenirs.

Beautiful wild gardens restored to former glory. Sit on the lawns with a picnic basket or explore the hills and look for James Delaney's lazer cut animals hidden between the plants. Stunning views over Jozi from the Sundial.

Walkhaven Dog Park

A beautiful park where dogs have more rights than humans :) Both pup and I thoroughly enjoyed walking/running right around the dam - if you're worried about your dog being off the leash around so many other dogs for the first time, wait until you get to the other side of the dam before taking her/him off the leash, it's much quieter there. Plenty of trees, shade, picnic tables, braai areas, taps, and a few bowls around for pups to drink from. Even a couple of plastic "clams" filled with water that we could soak pup in to cool him down. If your dog loves playing with other dogs, this is the place to be. The best part for me was that I'm new to living with a dog, and I got some lovely advice from friendly dog lovers there. The staff is friendly, and the cafe looks cute but I didn't eat there. It's a little smaller than I had been led to believe - think large plot rather than farm size.

Johannesburg Zoo

I’m one of those who loves seeing animals out in the wild rather than seeing them in zoos, but we all enjoyed a day out at this zoo. There is a huge variety of animals (mammals, birds, reptiles and others) so it caters for all, the cages are spacious and clean, there are cafes, food stalls and restrooms aplenty. I would recommend this especially for children!

Zoo Lake Park

Beautiful park with lots of space available to put a blanket on the green lawn and enjoy a picnic as you watch the ducks float around on the tranquil lake. Row a boat on the lake which you can hire for about a 1dollar a person for an entire hour. Just chill and relax and let the world go by. Very clean and well maintained
