The 10 Best Nature & Parks in Henderson, Nevada (NV)

September 22, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

Ideally situated just south of Las Vegas and just west of Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam, Henderson may lack Sin City's flamboyance, but it makes up for it in activities. Golf any of eight championship courses throughout the year, sample delectable treats from Ethel M Chocolates as you explore the Botanical Cactus Garden, the world’s largest cactus collection, pay respects at the Henderson Veteran's Memorial Wall or take your binoculars to the Bird Viewing Preserve.

Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve

This is a brilliant gem near Las Vegas. We needed some outdoor time after two days indoors and this was great. Our Lyft driver had no idea it was there and planned to bring his kids there the next day. Roadrunners, verdin, Gambel’s quail, American avocet, northern shoveler, ruddy duck, cinnamon teal, hummingbirds, and much much more! The staff was wonderful and kind to this visitor from the East Coast. Go here if you love birding!

Cornerstone Park

This is large open 100 acres space park with the 31 acre "Railroad Lake" showcased in the center. There are multiple trails that encircle it and this park has something for everyone. Runners/walkers: The trials around the lake can be around a mile depending on which paths you take. There are paved and dirt paths and the motion sensored lighting on the paved roads are bright if you visit in the evening. Courts: Basketball courts and sand volleyball courts are present to get your game on. Picnickers, loungers and dog owners: There's a large grass area for everyone to run around in. There's shaded individual tables as well as a large patio pavilion next to the bathroom which is utilized for special events here. FYI there's tons of geese that wander and it brings character to this lovely park. There's plenty of parking which makes this park an easy visit for visitors. This is a great park to visit when you need to get outside. Enjoy!

What is amazing is that almost all the parks are different. They are all beautiful. Valley of fire has petrified wood, cool rock formations and petroglyphs. Definitly worth the trip and highly recommended. Not too far from Las Vegas.

Very near from Las Vegas strip. A good site trip, something different to do other than the normal casinos/night club/shows. Go early when it is cool. I did the petroglyph trail, you can do easy just by doing the river walk. I see families with young children. You can always turn back once you had enough, but you can also go harder at the end when you had to climb some rocks. Parking was not an issue when I was there, but it could be if you come during the busy time.

Living in Las Vegas, I have heard about the Ethel M Cactus Garden Christmas Lights. This year, I was lucky to hear about the required reservations due to Covid and snagged a reservation. Invited several friends, but only one would accompany me. We made it two minutes late, but were welcomed with open arms and thermometer (for Covid testing). We dropped off the food bank donation (toys or food were suggested on their website). Driving there, you do not see anything until you turn the final corner. The spectacular display just appears as you turn into the parking lot. And a glorious and welcome site it was. Your reservation is for 15 minutes of walking and viewing the entirely decorated 3 acres of cactus gardens. You are welcomed with your choice of milk or dark chocolate piece of candy to get your energy up for the viewing. There are identifying signs for various cacti that you see along the one way path (again, for Covid). Amazing to see these long cactus spines sticking out from trunks wrapped in colored lights.. Different presentations as the cactus changed. Lights in trees, cascading like water, filling up and starting again. One section had displays of blue and green jewel colored lights turned into a family of peacocks. (See photo.) Lots to notice if you take the time to stop and look with eyes of wonder like I did. You don't have to enter the candy shop at the end of the viewing, if you don't want to. But we did. Tremendous variety in milk or dark chocolate and also sugar free. I selected a macadamia nut, Bailey's Irish Cream and coconut delight choice, all in dark chocolate. They were eaten in the car on the way home ! I blew my calorie count for the day, but it was a wonderful way to top off a totally sensory experience. My appointment was on Dec 28th, seeing all that beauty after Christmas did not matter for me, it might be different for children. Convenient to freeways, depending on the route you choose. Nighttime is early at this time of year, so lights are spectacular for viewing. Dress warm, take your time, look every which way for different views from behind of displays you already passed. Take it all in and have as much fun as we did.

They have only been open a couple of weeks and still working out the kinks. We took the grandkids early in he morning during the week and had the whole place to ourselves. The foam ball shooters were not working and they were working on them but everything else the kids wanted to do was working. They have several big slides, a trampoline area and several climbing areas for smaller kids. The kids had a great time and so did I. We will definitely take the kids back there when we go back to see them in the fall.
