The name of “Dongyanshan” in Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area means a “big eye staring at the east” which is what it looks like when looking from Amouping at Shimen Reservoir at sunrise. The park features million-year old geological landscapes, plentiful bird species, insects and mammals, including the Formosan hare (Lepus sinensis ) and the Formosan white-headed flying squirrel (Petaurista alborufus lena), along with the boundless tree sea of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica). It is a relaxing experience to walk through the Japanese cedar forest in the fog then climb up to the top to enjoy the view of the region from Taoyuan to greater Taipei.

When newcomers to Taiwan think of Taoyuan they probably think of the international airport. If they venture into Taoyuan, they will see a gritty town dominated by factories. But if this is all they see of Taoyuan, they are missing many beautiful locations, some connected to the late President Chiang Kai-shek and his partner, Soong Mei-ling. One particularly scenic spot is Jiaobanshan Park. "Shan" means mountain in Chinese. The park has maple trees, which turn bright red in autumn. About now, the plum trees will blossom. The plum trees were much loved by Chiang,as it is said the plum trees blossom when the weather is coldest. Of particular interest are two banyan trees plantted by Chiang and his wife in 1950, and are intended to be a symbol of love and fidelity. The ancient pine trees add some character to the park..
