Great trek where we were alone with our guide Santos 00 62 822 47742528. The ascent was very steep(+-3h) and began at 3am, for the last part , it is better to have gloves as the volcanic rock is very sharp. The descent was done with another way where we were sliding/ surfing on rocks. Santos was a great, nice and funny guide. His cousin has just opened a backpacker hostel near the starting point of the trek. We had a good coffee at her place. We keep good memories of this day with Santos. Take care :).

To get there it is boat ride from Labuan Bajo - day trip possible but most go for a few days. Most boats aim to get to Padar for sunrise or sunset so it's busy. Ours arrived early and it was still hot so we climbed to summit earlier than most and then went down and climbed the other summit - which is a very narrow slippery treacherous track (which guides discourage) But, we did it discretely and were alone on this summit for sunset and avoided crowds at the top. Generally hot in middle of day and climbing summit would be very hard - so avoid unless cooler.

This location is near by Bajawa town. Passed the forest area to parking area, walking distance to the photo spots, end up at the wood deck to see the stunning, breathtaking view. We waited for sunset from 4.30pm but the fogs came, breezing weather, the sun rays was beautiful, it looks like we were on top of the clouds! Grateful feeling of amazing Bajawa, Indonesia. Very recommended spot if you visit Bajawa. Memorable pictures was taken here. FYI, I hired Sanchez as Tourguide and driver, he is helpful and friendly ([email protected])

Kelimutu volcano is located 50 km east of Ende, central Flores on a road that climbs through several small villages and rice terraces into a dense rainforest near the summit. The volcano is in a national park, and there is a fee to enter: not much for locals and foreign Indonesian work visa holders, and more for tourists (about US$15). From a parking area a few hiking trails go up to the summit, which features 3 steep-sided craters with actively roiling multi-colored lakes. On a clear day you can see gases bubbling to the surface and a sulfide scum on the surface of the first two lakes. The local lake names are Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People - blue), and the other two lakes, Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens - bluish-green) and Tiwu Ata Polo ("Villany" Lake - red) are separated by a shared crater wall. The lake colors are attributed to gas & steam vents on the bottom of two of the crater lakes that discharge CO2 and H2S gases from a magma chamber deep beneath the mountain. The lake colors change throughout the year due to different chemical oxidation and reduction reactions between rain water, ground water, the amount and composition of the rising volcanic gases, and the abundance of iron and manganese. The colors in the lakes change independently from each other, suggesting that each crater lake has its own unique connectivity to the underlying magma chamber.

Getting to the lake I read some bad reviews for getting to the lake before I went there, I think they are exagerrated, it’s not that bad. When you leave the Trans Flores Highway in Bambor, it’s a 10km ride to Werung. The road is bumpy and the asfalt is in pretty bad shape at some places, but it’s a regular “Flores sideroad” I would say. We did it by motorbike (scooter 150cc - 2 persons on it) in approximatively one hour. The second part, from Werung to the lake village is another 10km, but the road is somewhat better and you need to cover less altitude. 30-45mins tops. So it should take you about 1h45 from Bambor to the lake if you’re good driver and if you don’t mind being tossed around a bit. Reward: a stunning, peaceful, truly of the beaten track experience. Make sure you arrive before sunset. Note that except hiking the nearest mountain, there’s nothing really to do over there, it’s just about enjoying a quiet time in a very nice and peaceful touristless environment. Petrus and Sicilia guesthouse We couldn’t be more enthousiastic about them and their place. Situated at 20m from the lake with a nice garden and a pond (when you arrive at the T-junction at the lake, turn left to go to the village), is the right place to enjoy the lake views (go on the balcony of the guesthouse to watch the sunset). Petrus and Sicilia are the perfect hosts, they’re adorable and love to receive guests. Petrus speaks English and it’s easy to communicate with him. He invited us to dine with him and his wife Sicilia at their place. As I said, off the beaten track. A room for 2 is roughly 300k IDR meals exlcuded. Anyway, we would have stayed longer if our timing would have allowed it.

Pretty awesome. Took one of the best pictures ever. Worth it. Btw if you go early before 4 you can skip the entrance fee and see the sunrise which was amazing... (and i hate waking up early)

Pulau Koaba, which is also known as Kalong Island (Fruit Bat Island), is a low-lying circular island measuring 500 metres across and appearing to comprise a core of taller trees surrounded by dense mangrove. At dusk, the sight of thousands of bats leaving their roost and heading for their feeding grounds is a magnificent spectacle.
Unbelievable Sunset on the water, exciting and interesting watching the thousands of flying foxes come out of the mangroves and fly overhead. Good experience!
