The passionate hobby of Nek Chand, a government employee in Chandigarh, to convert waste material into artefacts, is the origin of The Rock Garden is located in the northern end of the City and is sandwiched between the Sukhna Lake, the High Court and the the Chandigarh Club. Nek Chand used broken/unfunctiional crockery, tiles, sanitary ware, tyres, Bangles, dustbins, tubelights, pebbles, marbles, bottles etc to convert them into meaningful artefacts in different shapes and sizes and divided them into different sections to facilitate viewing and maintenance by the staff. Visitors have to buy tickets to gain entrance and they can freely move around inside to see the work of art interspersed with bridges/culverts and waterfalls to add beauty to the place. Washrooms, cafeterias have been provided inside the complex running into several acres as the place continued to grow while Nek Chand was alive. As a one man show, made out of entirely waste material, it is a something extraordinary, which merits a visit and is frequented by Indian and overseas Visitors. The Rock Garden is one of its kind in the world and is synonymous with the name of Nek Chand, the Founder and Chandigarh, the City Beautiful !

Located near Rock Garden, the Nagar Van (City Forest) is for nature and bird lovers. A beautifully built mini forest with trees and water bodies within the city. It is also a home to several species of birds which can be found all around this place. We easily spotted - Babblers, Grey Hornbill, White Throated Kingfisher, Pond Heron, Little Cormorant, Brown Headed Barbet, Dorongo, Parakeets and many others. The City Forest opens early in the morning at 5:30 AM and is the best time for a morning walk and bird photography. Carry a water bottle and refrehments if you want to spend more time at the place.

Next to city centre, in Sector 16 is situated Zakir Hussain Rose Garden Asia's largest Rose Garden and is spreaded over 30 acres of land having over 1600 different species or roses. These have been planted beautifully carved out lawns and flowers beds. Like the cultural zone which is just across the road in sector 10,this was also planned by Dr. M.S. Randhawa as his interest in horticulture and fondness for flowers was profuse.
We visited the Rock Garden at Chandigarh a few days back. A board at the entrance informs the visitor that the garden is the largest Of its kind in Asia and is spread over 40 acres of land and has over 800 varieties of roses. We spent over an hour ( clearly inadequate) exploring the garden and were very impressed with the magnificent spectacle of the huge number of rose plants of multiple colours including a bed of GREEN roses!! Many visitors thronged the garden and several families were seen enjoying a family picnic. One of the ‘Must visit’ sights for a tourist in Chandigarh.
