In Hoogwoud, an old farm called West-Frisia is located. It is no longer used as a farm but as a museum and is able to attract visitors of all ages. Even though it no longer functions as a farm, to this day it manages to radiate a sentiment from times long gone. Once you enter the museum, it is as though time has stood still for over 150 years and you have just entered a real 19th century farm.

Go on an adventure with us tens of millions of years back to the time of the dinosaurs. Or to the last ice age where you are shivering from the cold, coming face to face with a life-sized mammoth, cave bear or saber-toothed cat. Also outside in the park you will experience the history and climb in a MIG2 and combat helicopter or imagine yourself as a scientist when you search for real fossils. History is brought to life on Historyland!

A very kind staff member gave us a personal tour and explanation of the lower floors which are actually an excavation of the old Roman wall, and as you proceed higher you can see how subsequent generations built upon the foundations. There is an excellent floor devoted to fauna, and the skull of a Mammoth takes pride of place. There is also an interaction floor, where we had our first experience of Virtual Reality, as the platform we appeared to be sitting on (an open helicopter perhaps) zoomed over the sea and river and then plunged under water so that we could see the fish-life swimming by. There is a restaurant and an observation deck to look out on the busy river. Well worth a visit.

When we planned a weekend in Maastricht with our two children (aged 6 and 4), we decided immediately that we had to visit the Natural History Museum. And boy, am I happy that we did! This museum might seem small at first, but it is not. It is filled with great exhibits, interesting to both children and adults. There are lots of interactive bits and pieces, including a great bird section in which you get to hear various types of bird song. The museum is located slightly out of the center of Maastricht, near the university library (5-10 minute walk from Vrijthof). I highly recommend this museum - not only for the information on the locally found dinosaur (Mosasaurus), but for all the little things you get to learn and see.

Closed for reconstruction until mid 2019 - Naturalis is the national research institute for biodiversity. While our new building is being constructed, our scientists continue to dedicate themselves to describing, understanding and preserving biodiversity without interruption. The museum will be closed untill mid 2019.
What a great museum / day out for adults or families with kids. The museum (which had a super collection before) has been completely renovated and is now a real pleasure to visit. Multiple floors of exhibits and a winding route through the museum gently works upwards through geological time, geographies and environments with a mixture of status displays, audio visuals and interactive 3D and 4D experiences. The room in which you enter a Japanese earthquake is particularly fun (and very authentic) and the dinosaurs are just wonderful. One of the worlds most complete T-Rex skeletons and some really great interactive dinosaur exhibits too. A good restaurant/cafe/shop as well. The architecture of the lobby with beautiful modern wooden galleries, light and natural stone stairways is just gorgeous (and can be viewed for free!) The museum itself is not cheap (16 euros, also for children older than 4) so make sure you allow enough time to see it (or buy a museumkaart which allows you unlimited access to many museums in NL which is good value)

You can spend hours in this compact museum, provided you have some interest in natural history and associated things about nature. The museum is situated in a historic villa in the Museumpark, sharply contrasting with the modern box like structure of the "Kunsthal" on the right and the immense complex of the Erasmus MC university hospital on the left. The museum is chock full with fossils of all ages, plants, stuffed animals, an interesting presentation of nature in the city, examples of extremes in the animal kingdom and a special exhibition about wild flowers. Museums like this Natural History Museum are my favourites, because an untold amount of information and knowledge is brought together with loving care. Entrance for a fee. Free entrance with the Dutch annual museum pass. Reaching the museum is easiest with tram line 8, stop "Kievitslaan". This puts you down just opposite the museum entrance at the "Westzeedijk".
