New York State has it all – booming metropolises, majestic waterfalls, mountains, wine country, chicken wings. Yes, NYC is a magnet for tourists, but an exploration of the rest of the state can be equally thrilling. The Finger Lakes Wine Region is a vision of serene waters, quaint B&Bs, and pretty vineyards. Movie buffs will love Rochester, home of the George Eastman House and one of the world’s most comprehensive film archives. On your way to Niagara Falls, stop in Buffalo to fuel up on spicy wings.

This park offers a number of trails that cover woods, water, and the elevated bridge/road over the dam. Be prepared for dogs off leash especially in the early morning.

This national memorial managed by the National Park Service was the home of statesman and United States Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Restored and reopened in 2011, the public can enjoy exhibits on some of Hamilton's achievements and challenges on the ground floor, a brief introductory film on his incredible rise from an orphan in the Caribbean to an indespensible molder of the early nation, and visit the furnished first floor by scheduled tour.
Very worthwhile visit, tucked away in a nice neighborhood in upper Manhattan, with an informative short video. Also very close to the CUNY campus, which is beautiful and worth a visit in itself.

Fire island beaches are the spectacular jewel of the south shore of Long Island New York. The beautiful sandy beaches line the barrier island. Each town on fire island has its own unique draw-some are quiet, some have bars and restaurants that are lively. Find one that you love !

Site of the historic 1777 Battles of Saratoga, which represented the first significant victory for the rebels in the American Revolution. Today, the 3,200-acre park is a popular tourism and recreation site and a wildlife conservation area.
We unfortunately didn't have much time for a proper visit, but did our best to see everything. The visitor center offered a nice movie to refresh my memory about the battle, as well as an exhibit on Benedict Arnold that was very interesting. The park tour can be done by car or bike. The roads are smooth and there is a bike lane. The overlooks near the water have stunning views. Wished we had more time to walk some of the trails.

The 11,000-acre refuge is located midway between Buffalo and Rochester in western New York State.
Went in early August and wasn’t expecting much because the migratory birds come through here in the spring and many of the pools are dried up this time of year. However, the pool around the kanyoo trail was still full of water and full of ducks, geese, and herons. The kanyoo trail is less than a mile loop. Make sure you take the blue trail when it splits off from the yellow trail for the best wildlife viewing sites and a unique boardwalk over the marshy area. The kanyoo trail is located off Lewiston Rd (see website for map). There is a barn like structure and gravel parking lot at the start of trail.

We had the opportunity to take a guided tour of Fort Wadsworth and the Gateway area at Great Kills. These were views and places that you would not believe were located within a city unless you see them for yourself. Beaches, grassy areas, forts, wildlife - and all with amazing insights and history from the Park Rangers who love it everyday. I highly recommend a tour of Fort Wadsworth!

This is a wonderfully preserved bit of lakeside joy. Wonderful views. Lots of room. Nice bike and walking paths. Plenty of picnic space. Whoever made the decision to preserve this space for the public deserves our eternal thanks.

COVID-19 Response UPDATE: Beginning August 26, 2020, General Grant NM reopened access to: General Grant NM Main Plaza General Grant NM Overlook Pavilion With public health in mind, the following facilities/operations remain CLOSED/suspended at this time: General Grant NM Mausoleum and Mosaic Benches General Grant NM Visitor Center and Public Restroom Facilities Check Website for latest information about site access, virtual tours, and, upcoming events Site description: A Unit of the National Park Service, the site serves as the final resting place of President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia. This is also the largest mausoleum in North America. It testifies to a people's gratitude for the man who ended the bloodiest conflict in American history as Commanding General of the Union Army and then, as the 18th President of the United States, who strove to heal a nation after a civil war and make rights for all citizens a reality.
I found it odd, this burial site for Grant and his wife, just because this isn't what is typically done here in the USA - except perhaps in DC. It's quite a grand structure - really beautiful and moving. Talk to to a ranger and take a tour. Then tour the surrounding area as well. Very very nice. Highly recommend.
