Hortobagy is a marvellous place, the 9 hole bridge and the extra ordinary plain is inspiring. Visit during the spring or autumn bird migration and the drive in is like a bird safari. Bird Hospital Sadly many birds get hurt in the Migration But help is on hand. Whilst in Hortobagy please visit the animal park. Contrary to other reviews it IS NOT A ZOO, rather a wild bird hospital and rehabilitation Center. You can see into the operating theater, see the birds with legs and wings in splints in the indoor ward (the small will stay be hardest to forget), then see the rehabilitation cages that allow the birds to regain their strength and also a healthy fear of humans BEFORE they are released. There are all kinds from Storks to Eagles and Owls. Pay them a visit and be part of the solution! Market Excellent local market, with lots of local produce and useful and charming objects d’art including a magnificent selection of Bull whips! Csarda The Csarda (big eatery by the bridge) is lovely, great food and drinks and popular with the locals. Try the Hortobagy Pancakes with local beef as a filler. Nice and filling and supportive of the farming collective that maintains the Puszta.

I visited the Rakoczi cave in Bodvarako. I suggest you book appointment in advance as the number of people in a group is limited. We were lucky as we had no appointment and the tour guide also did the tour for only 2 people. But he mentioned that sometimes many people try to enter at the same time. You can take pictures without buying an extra photo ticket. There is a lake inside the cave, and the stones are very special, also what is interesting that this cave was a mine before so you can also see some parts of the mine. Be prepared that there are many steep stairs and ladders and if you are afraid of heights maybe better skip this. Wear boots or trainers and a jacket, it is cold 10 °C. To me this cave is the most special in the Aggelek National Park.

I made a birdwatching day trip to Kiskunsági National Park with Tamas, from WingsOfHungary.com Winter is a relative quite season, but thanks to the field experience of Tamas, we saw a lot of birds wintering there, including thousand of geese, long-eared owl, bearded reedling, woodpeckers, great bustards... I recommand such a trip if you are birdwatcher. Tamas can pick you up in Budapest with his car.

The Pal-volgyi Cave system is 33 kilometers long, and it's the longest cave system of Hungary. The Cave is famous for its unique dripstones, the narrow corridors, and the large level differences are also very typical. It takes the visitor to the most fascinating stone formations, dripstones, glittering calcite-crystals and fossilised seashells. The whole tour can easily be fulfilled in normal clothes and comfortable shoes. Just make sure that in summer you need warm clothes, because the temperatures in the cave are 10 degrees Celsius. The tour is in hungarian and/or english language. Visitation is prohibited for children under age 5 and below 120 cm, or if you have a problem in your physical condition (for example: broken leg, knee problems). For kids under the limitation, or guests with phisical diffculties there are short tours available, which are joining the previous group in the cave.
The natural flora and fauna around the charming town of Dinnyes is just a train ride away from Budapest. You should book your visit in advance so that a guide will wait for you at the meeting point. The nature is left undisturbed so that the unique species of cattle and sheep with long, twisted horns that will amaze both children and adults. Further along friendly goats await to greet the visitors. But perhaps the most breathtaking view is the lake which hosts dozens of bird species. Toursists can climb up the bird observatory to see the protected species or even participate in the bird monitoring process, which means that they can see the birds up close (don’t forget your binoculars!) or even hold them. For those who love bird watching, keep an eye out for the annual bird watching contest and book your place in advance!

Great place for a half day/ whole day in the nature with the family. A small train brings you in the heart of a national park. You can have a lot of fun with the children in the "forest school", have a picnic or buy locally grown fish (pisztrang), see a huge cave and a few waterfalls. Totally loved it.
