You can eat very well—and very cheaply—in Taipei. The restaurants may not look posh, but the quality of the food is superlative. And there’s a huge variety of restaurants—in addition to local Taiwanese specialties, you’ll find regional cuisines from all over China, as well as great Indian, Japanese and even Italian options. Just make sure to leave some room for snacks—street-vendor food here is addictive.

Embrace nature and flower gardens with a picnic or leisurely hike up the rolling hillsides of Yangmingshan. The park is accessible by public bus.
Would recommend to hike Mt Qixing from Xiaoyukeng as the entrance to the trail is just next to the bus stop at the Xiaoyukeng Recreation Area. Do use the toilets there as there are none along the trail. I took bus 260 at Taipei Main Station (north exit 2) to the Yangminshan Bus Terminal. Transfer to small shuttle bus 108 that makes its round in the park. Easycard is acceptable or have exact change of NTD15/ride. Took about 1.5hrs to Mt Qixing Main Peak, another 15mins to the East peak & another hour downhill to Lengshukeng Recreation & Visitors Centre. Was a lovely hike on a sunny day with 360degrees of Taipei.

This hike, on a clear day, will yield amazing views of the city and also views to the ocean. The views are consistent throughout and will distract you from the steep climb uphill. Wear proper footwear, bring water. The main summit is nice but always crowded. Keep going to the east peak where the views are just as lovely, but it isn’t overrun.

Yangming Shan, also known as Yangming Mountain, is in a hilly region to the north of Taipei. Many people had weekenders there when US forces were stationed in Taiwan, when it was known as Grass Mountain. The US forces left Taiwan in 1979, when the US recognized Beijing as the government of all China; it's still a popular day out.. Yangming Shan can get quite chilly in winter, when it is well-known for its plum blossoms. The plum tree blooms when the weather is coldest. During the martial law period the song "Mei Hua" (plum flower) was recognized by almost everyone in Taiwan. Getting to Yangming Shan is not difficult, it takes around an hour by public transport.

The Maokong gondola stops at Taipei Zoo, Zhinan Temple and the Maokong station. The Maokong station stop at the top of the mountain offers a panoramic view of the city and visitors can try delicacies like noodles with tea oil and glutinous rice with bamboo shoots.
A very enjoyable day trip taking the cable car from Taipei Zoo MRT Station to Maokong where there are several short hiking trails with waterfalls and brooks. We saw many butterflies and dragonflies and came across miniature crabs, as well as many interesting plant species. There were a few steep flights of stairs along the way but overall, the hiking trails are relatively safe and easy to walk. For lunch we ate at a restaurant on the main road with tea-themed dishes such as tea fried rice and tea-smoked duck. While you are here in tea country, it is worth visiting a tea house and have tea prepared for you with pomp and ceremony while you enjoy the spectacular mountain views. The tea house experience is not exactly cheap and depends on the quality of tea that you have chosen. As it was a hot day, we also stopped for some refreshing tea jelly and oolong tea ice cream. We were very lucky to be able to get down by cable car as well because it started raining and the service was then suspended due to thunderstorm activity.

Closed MRT is Jiantan. Just follow the signs. Not too difficult a hike. Provides great views and you can see planes taking off from the airport. Nice temple too and a radio tower. Check it out
