This beautiful archipelago, where Scottish Gaelic is still spoken, is divided into the Inner and Outer Hebrides and stretches the length of Scotland's west coast. The most visited and largest of the Western Isles is the brooding Isle of Skye, a short ferry ride or bridge away from the mainland. Islay, home to prolific whisky production, is another gem. Highlights of the less visited Outer Isles include stark Lewis and the town of Stornoway, rugged Harris, with sandy beaches and tranquil Barra.

We made the brief detour here on the way to Stornoway airport, not far but well worth the easy walk from the car park area. The story brought tears to my eyes. As you stand there, read the inscriptions, look out to sea and imagine what the men had already endured, they were so near home yet so many lost their lives so close to the shore. The work that had been completed here for the centenary of this disaster is brilliant, new tarmac walkway, lots of information boards along the way. The new memorial states all the names of the people who lost their lives, it really tugs at the heartstrings.

The walk from the car park to the monument is around a mile and although the day was a bit wet and very windy it was a good bracing walk The views back across the land and out to sea are superb particularly the raw and wild beauty of the Mull of Oa The monument itself which commemorates the several hundred lives lost from 2 troop ships in 1918 is very impressive. It was built by the American Red Cross and honouring their military is something the Americans seem to do particularly well

Good walk on moorland and through forest. The highlight was seeing the carving of Hercules, his grave and reading all about him in a small wooden hut a short walk away.

Very large statue of Madonna and Child which is situated at the northern end of South Uist. You can drive up or walk the steep path to the statue. On a clear day the views over North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist are stunning. More prominent signs would be helpful.
