New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ ( listen); Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses—the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui), and the South Island (Te Waipounamu)—and around 600 smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long period of isolation, New Zealand developed a distinct biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.

Durie Hill Memorial Tower

Reviewed By SLRobinsonNZ - Whanganui, New Zealand

We regularly visit the Tower, every school holidays. The grandkids have the energy to make the climb and I stagger along behind them. At least when they reach the top before I get there they can't come to any harm as it has a 'cage' over the top of it. We love looking at the fantastic view and identifying places we know. If you are from out of town, use the historic elevator to get to the top of the hill. There is an earth cache at the Tower (for geocachers) and a Munzee at the top of the elevator. There are great things to photograph at the bottom of the elevator.

Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial

Reviewed By Ginges_revenge - Brisbane, Australia

It was a lovely and touching memorial to those who lost their lives in the earthquakes. It nestled alongside the Avon river and is lovely in the stone with the names inscribed. The little pink boot with some stones with the name Mandy on them was a graphic reminder of the loss and really humanized the experience. Its a must do to pay your respects to those that lost their lives in the quake.
