Ballarat Cenotaph

The Cenotaph is in Sturt St, Ballarat. The Cenotaph is both noticeable and impressive. It is inscribed "Our Glorious Dead." It is dedicated to those who fell in both World Wars. The Cenotaph is 30 feet (9 meters) tall. It is faced in Hawkesbury sandstone. The Cenotaph was unveiled by Sir Dallas Brookes, Governor of Victoria, in November 1949. Some 3,000 people attended the ceremony. The Cenotaph has remained a feature of Sturt St in central Ballarat.

The Eureka Stockade rebellion was led by Peter Lalor, an Irishman who later became a prominent politician. The Governor, Sir Charles Hotham, was criticized for the official response. The Stockade is a significant site in Australian history.

What a wonderfull structure in memory of the band playing to calm passengers on the sinking Titanic. Music in Ballarat is a part of Ballarat history and this remarkable structure honours the past.

So many people of Ballarat gave their life during the wars of Korea, Borneo, Malaya and Vietnam. They deserved this monument. The monument is well put together. There is a wall with the countries: Korea, Borneo, Malaya and Vietnam On the very top it says: “Lest we forget.” The cross intersects the wall. Worthwhile to see!
