The trek up to the top of Fourviere Hill is very steep and long, not something I would have wanted to do as a youngster, definitely something I would NOT do as a senior! But luckily for us all, there is the funicular! OK, so I like funiculars, even short ones like the Paaris Sacre Cour funicular, they are just great fun. But it was a must for us in Lyon to access Fourviere Hill. You enter the station for the tram close to the river near the theater district in the Old Town. The kiosks for ticket purchases luckily has an English option, but even that was confusing for me. I was looking for round trip tickets, which is not how they are labeled. There was a ticket for going up, there was a ticket for return, but that's it. Finally I realized that the 'return' ticket was twice the price of the regular up ticket, so that is how they label the round trip tickets. The price was 6 Euro for a round trip ticket, well worth the price. We boarded the tram in the station which was pretty sparsely used in November. Shortly before leaving, a group of young French school children boarded the funicular and they were raucous, energetic, and clumsy. We rolled our eyes at each other thinking, “What’s the matter with kids today?”, when the teacher clapped her hands and told them to settle down. Much to my surprise they did - something that would never happen at home. The trip up to the top of the hill was enjoyable, in addition to the upward tunnels through the hill there were homes and courtyards to view. Fun ride to the top and back, very easy once you figure out the type of ticket to purchase! The funiculars go to two destinations, the Basilique Notre Dame and to the Roman ruins. As we had been to the basilica on a coach tour we only did the funicular to the Roman ruins, which are well worth the trip and free to boot. The basilica can be viewed from almost any point in the city of Lyon and when you are near the Soanne River looking up at it in the distance you realize how high the hill is and are thankful once again that you use the funicular to access either the basilica or the Roman ruins!
