Several 4WD tracks over sand and rocks lead southwest off Sandy Cape Road to North Head. Main track starts just after the Sandy Cape Information Board. Spectacular scenery along the way, passing beaches and World War 2 bunkers. It is about 6km from the Sandy Cape Road turnoff to North Head. Not for the faint-hearted, and a 4WD vehicle is mandatory (forget the AWD soft off-roader). Make sure your GPS unit Trip Log is turned on, to help you navigate your way back out again! Google for detailed descriptions of the trip. This was the highlight of our adventure north of Perth. Alternatively, a more prudent and safer option is to sign up with the local tour operators, for a 4WD tour to Sandy Cape and North Head. Obviously, no cellphone coverage in this area.

We followed the road signage to the main carpark. Easy paved walkway to the lookout which provides amazing views of the coast. You can walk down to beach from here but we chose to exit and instead drive past the Red Bluff Caravan park where you can park near the beach and explore the red bluff Beach. Many rockpools with little crabs and fish around. Lovely place to explore and have a swim.

The Z Bend Gorge is great. We took two different walks. The short walk to the lookout point with a breathtaking view over the river was quite easy and 1.2 km long and easy to tackle. The river trail is a more challenging hike and goes down to the river. It is not a problem if you are reasonably fit and sure-footed. Good shoes and enough water are necessary. Sometimes the trail goes steeply downhill, there are natural steps and some loose rocks. We also had to climb down ladders through the narrow gorge. It was an interesting hike and we enjoyed it. The break by the river was also nice with beautiful scenery. Although swimming would be possible, we decided not to do so because the green water would not be inviting. Back we went the same steep way, as it is a one-way trail. At 2.6 km there and back, the trail is not very long, but challenging due to the heat and steepness. Both hikes are worth it.

Fraser Avenue Lookout is in Perth's King's Park, one of the most popular and famous tourist attractions in Perth. The reasons will be clear when you visit. Not only do you get the best views of Perth city and the Swan River but there are botanical gardens to wander through and guided tours with detailed information about local flora, fauna and culture. Fraser Avenue Lookout is on the edge of King's Park which is set high on a hill overlooking the Perth city centre and the Swan river that flows alongside the city. Most tour buses will stop here and if hiring a car there are parking facilities in the area. The lookout is what it says it is - a place from which you look over the city but it is within walking distance of a restaurant, cafe, gift shop and information centre from where you book guided tours. There are also garden beds with local flora within easy walking distance. Fraser Avenue Lookout is an absolute must see for any visitors to Perth. I have lived in Perth most of my life and I still never tire of visiting this place.

We went up to the lookout during the day and the panoramic view of York, Avon Valley, Mount Bakewell and the surrounds was just beautiful. Worth a visit.

If you want the natural phenomenon, this version is probably second best, best being Settlers Beach at Cossack. No markets and way less people so much more enjoyable with a picnic and a chilled drink.

Definitly visit at sunset, one of the best thing we did in our week in Kununurra. Breathtaking views from the top. Be warned it is a bit of a climb.

This remarkable huge huge trees have been used to watch out for fires in the national parks. It is one of three trees that have been used as a fire observatory. Fascinating to see brave people climb the rods all the way to the top. Not for me. But loved seeing people climb the heights then come back down. There are good information boards to give you some perspective about the history.
