Things to do in Sierra Leone

The Hotobah Lodge is located at 5 Boyle Lane, off Murray Town Road in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The area is famously known as ‘Banana Wata’ because of the dense growth of banana trees in the marshlands and local wharf leading to the ‘White Man’s Bay’ and the Atlantic Ocean. The Lodge is situated just off Wilkinson Road in the Congo Cross area, which is only 3 miles from Central Freetown. The Lodge therefore has the advantage of being 10 minutes away from the Water Taxi/Hovercraft landing port, 15 minutes from the Heliport and 20 minutes away from the Government Wharf Ferry Terminal. The Lodge is also very close to the famous Lumley Beach and Aberdeen entertainment district of Freetown. These relaxed surroundings are the leading attraction to the presently booming tourism industry in the country. The Lodge is well known in local entertainment circles because it hosts the popular 'Salone Facebook Jam' every Saturday from 8 p.m to 3 a.m. This is a social networking experience which showcases contemporary Soul, Funk and R&B music, usually with a hint of African Drum ‘n Base featuring traditional African performers. The Lodge offers the amenities of a hotel but in a more private and secluded setting. For example:•Meals and Refreshments•Maid and Laundry service•Internet and Wi Fi service•Transfers to / from Water Taxi, Heliport and Ferry terminalsThe Lodge is also available for event hire (e.g. conferences and parties) by arrangement.
This is my second time visiting the amenities are great by Sierra Leone standards the food is great the staff is efficient and effective especially Mamed the hotel is in walking distance to eateries and shopping not a bad deal and minute from lumley beach

This place is a must see in Sierra Leone. Made a day trip to tribewanted John Obey. We had a warm welcoming by the community and the people. A great place to relax. A place like no other. Had the best fish ever at tribewanted! It was so much fun fishing together with the community. Hassan did his very best to make this a special place for us. Can't wait to go again. Will definitely visit with staying overnight.

Four bungalows are available in our compound; in each bungalow, there is a double Bed and in two of them we can provide a spare matress. People can come also with their own tent and we can provide ourselves 3 tents. Food is available but if the guest prefer they can make their own food or eat in other restaurants.
Maroon View is an amazing budget option on the Freetown Peninsula. It is located on one of the most beautiful coastlines of Sierra Leone. If you are looking for golden beaches, crystal-clear water, palm trees and coconuts... then this is the place! The rooms are very basic but charming. They are small wooden bungalows overlooking the beach, you have a mosquito net, and electricity works all day long. The bathroom is shared and clean, though there was no running water when I was there. But if you've travelled in West Africa before then I am sure you are used to bucket-showers by now. Setting up your own tent, or using their tents, are both possible if you prefer a cheaper option. The food is okay. Many people have their meals next door because its better. Still I enjoyed the meals they offer. In the weekends the place fills up with expatriates. Usually there is a bonfire by the beach and everybody mingles and has a good time. If you want to meet people and share a beer, then I recommend spending your weekends here. One negative are the locals who walk onto the hotel property to try and sell their goods. This is quite normal in Sierra Leone and of course its part of the 'beach-town-vibes', but still it can get quite annoying. All in all I highly recommend Maroon View! It is a shame not many people know about it. A true gem!

Hi all, we stayed with Martin at Eco-lodge for a day and night. Went for the day and stayed the night He cooked a ovely Regent fish (type of Grouper Fish) that was devine for lunch. Then had a baraccuda and tiger prawns for diner. Both meals were great. Accomadation is basic but functional. Stayed aon 1st floor (2nd floor for Americans) with lovely view of beach Went snorkeling - lots of fish to see, parrot fish groupers, etc Very much recommended, but check with him when he is available

Turned up and had a bit of trouble getting down as the ocada would only go so far. When I arrived everyone was asleep and they didn't remember I had made a booking. They were quick to sort it out and were happy to offer me food. The room was dark and damp. This resulted in the evening having several cockroaches crawl into my bags. I realised this as I was getting changed in the dark the next morning. The rooms were also so damp that most of my electronics were soaked even within my bags- to be fair it is rainy season and so should have expected as much. The generator had broken when I arrived and so there was no light or charging. But you don't really go to a place like this if you want to be connected to Freetown. But it seemed silly to be charged for it when nothing worked and when it was supposed to it was only in the main part of the lodge and nothing near the accommodation. The beach was pretty nice and would be perfect for a couples retreat or some very much alone time. The food cooked there was pretty basic but alright. For suggestions it could be useful to add some common area like hammocks or some comfortable-ish chairs for guests if the price is to really dictate the experience.

While Kona Lodge is not the "state of the art, luxurious hotel" that it self-advertises as, it is very good for Freetown standards. They have electricity 24 hours (with a generator that's turned on immediately once the public service cuts off) and very reliable wifi, both of which are key for business travellers like myself. The staff are VERY friendly and quite helpful -- both to take care of your needs at the hotel and to make suggestions of places to go in and around town. It's got a great view of the city and is located in a convenient location: 15 minutes drive to downtown and 20 minutes to Aberdeen, depending on traffic. Food is decent. Decor is simple. Sometimes can be a tad noisy if you have guests that get up early or play loud music (as the walls are thin), but that'll be nearly impossible to avoid in this city.

Given that this is a hotel in one of the poorest countries in the world I have to adjust my rating upwards to a 3. To their credit the hotel is very nicely decorated and situated to view the landscape and sunset. It is in a convenient location. There are suites but we just booked an average room which was small and little space for suitcases. The power was out when we arrived and took an hour to get back up, which meant it was hot. They have air conditioning, but the room I was in was not working very well, although others worked fine. There is a tiny little 19 inch TV which has a few channels to watch. The door knob was falling off because it was missing a screw on the top, but the doors locked okay. The toilets worked well but the showers were just a trickle so there were provisions for bucket style bathing. There were also small bugs and in the bathroom was a crack in the wall where tiny ants came out at times. Even with these challenges I would stay there again as there are not many comparable choices in the area. The staff were nice and the meals were good. There were only a few choices given and no menu. It was whatever was available and the service was slow but the food was worth the wait. They also had Wi-Fi but it was slow and I could not upload many of my photos.

THE CITY CENTRE HOTEL WITH A DIFFERENCE. This new hotel offers quality services while maintaining its value for money. It offers 10 ensuite rooms, each including shower and toilet facilities, televisions, fans and a friendly atmosphere. The hotel is also equipped with central cooling and internet facilities are available.
If you are a young traveller looking to stay somewhere simple,in a great location and for a reasonable price, this is the place for you. For $40 for a room ($35 for single occupancy) you get a small room with a double bed (complete with high quality mosquito net), with a torn plastic curtain to separate the 'en-suite'. From my understanding, this is a very good price for Freetown standards. The best feature of Derrycombe, however, is definitely Mr Yusuf - the owner. Born in Freetown, but educated in London, Mr Yusuf will arrange anything for you, for a much better price than you would get from most people in Sierra Leone. He will also get one of his 'boys' to take you wherever you want to go in town. The only negative, which unfortunately is a big one is the unreliability of electricity and running water - of the 5 nights we spent there, we had electricity for 2 and water for 3. If, like us, you can accept this, Derrycombe is the perfect place for you.
