Located in the mountains of western North Carolina, the John C. Campbell Folk School offers weeklong and weekend courses in traditional craft, fine art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, nature studies, photography, storytelling and writing. Founded in 1925, the school is based on the Danish folk school model, and strives to provide experiences in hands-on learning and community life that are joyful and enlivening. Students live on campus and share family-style meals. Each day begins with early morning music and storytelling. Nature walks, tours of local artisans' studios, evening music, and dance programs are part of each week's schedule. A founding member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the school also operates a craft gallery that represents over 300 regional artists.
I live near the John C Campbell Folk School (lucky me!) and also teach here several times a year. There are week long classes year round and weekend classes once a month in all kinds of crafts etc. - metal/jewelry, clay, weaving, basketry, blacksmithing, woodworking, book arts, cooking, music, dancing, painting and so much more! I think a week at the Folk School is like a summer camp for adults. It is non-competitive and is a wonderful place to learn something that you've always thought of doing but never had the time, hone up on skills, try something new! Take a look at their website to get an idea of the classes available. I take classes as well as teach (I teach Stained Glass, and Kaleidoscope classes) so I speak as both a student and an instructor. Come! It is also a beautiful part of the country.

My wife and I had the opportunity to make a glass in the "Hot Shop" today. Last time we were in Asheville, we found this spot too late to participate, so we were sure to make arrangements this time. It was a "blast"!!! The staff were welcoming and warm . Our instructor, Stephanie, was fantastic. She explained everything, made us feel at ease and comfortable and was very knowledgeable. Being able to make our own blown glass tumbler was great addition to our trip to Asheville. I highly recommend this experience.

A professional designer goldsmith for 45 years, ROBERTO VENGOECHEA’S Avant-Garde collection showcases futuristic and innovative designs which defy the conventional forms and genres, yet are practical in their form and fit. Challenging acceptable 21st century jewelry traditions, with square, architectural and geometric shapes, these unusual designs push the boundaries of ‘thinking outside the box.’ “Like Gaudi, I like to fuse organic with architectural design in a futuristic manner. I consider myself a sculptor first and a jeweler second.” Vengoechea opened his Gallery and studio in 1996, located in Black Mountain, NC. Browse this quaint, artisan-owned gallery in a museum-quality setting, with recessed shadow boxes which entice the viewer to study the contents of each box. His work is also available in select galleries in North Carolina. Vengoechea also teaches tourists and visitors a popular hands-on 1 day workshop (by appointment – 2 people per class) where each participant takes home their own hand-made work. “It’s all about the experience” as well as being lots of fun.
A couple of months ago we were in Black Mountain and stopped into the Visions of Creation Gallery. We looked at the beautiful jewelry that the had and got to talking to Roberto and June, the owners. Roberto has been creating fine jewelry for over 35 years and had several incredible rings and necklaces on display. However, one of the things he offered was a ring making class. With my wife's birthday coming up I decided that we should return and take the class. We both love rings and this would be something that she could say she made herself. The class takes about 8 hours and Roberto and June both make it a fun experience. Roberto helped us design the rings we wanted and then worked with us from start to finish, explaining each step of the way. By the time we were finished we not only had a beautiful hand crafted ring to take with us but also a good working knowledge of what goes into creating it. While that was exciting in itself, spending the day with Roberto and June was really what made the day as fun as it was. They both are such warm and friendly people. When we were done, they gave us a small graduation party complete with campaign and chocolates. We sat there for a long time just talking and having a very nice time. If you want to create a keepsake and have an amazing time then contact them and schedule a class. They can only do 2 people at a time and it is great for a couples event.

This is a new gallery, less than 2 years old, but it is becoming a magnet for special displays, lectures, exhibits, jewelry and textiles. Wonderful handmade jewelry in all prices, wall art, fabulous sculptures and unique artifacts are well chosen. Suzanne, the owner, selects artists to highlight each month and evening wine events take place often. The displays are remarkably well done, the gallery is airy with lots of natural light. Events are seamlessly hosted, whether it is a meeting, class or lecture. Pieces do not linger for long here, if you like it you better buy it or it will be gone.
