Nice hotel & inexpensive

Reviewed By KodoDrummer

The hotel and property are very nice, and the nightly rate I found to be very inexpensive. Certainly at about US$49 a night, the overall experience and quality of the room and attentive care received, the value received is much greater than the price paid. Room is spacious and the staff friendly and helpful. Grounds are beautiful.

Great Conference Hotel

Reviewed By SHVA

Massive, massive facility! Lobby atrium is five stories tall — with ‘stone murals’ to match, scale wise. Attached conference hall. Lovely, lush grounds overlooking lake. Room is equally gracious in size and amenities. Bed is large and comfortable. Bath has twin sinks, separate oversized tub, separate large shower, separate toilet room — and each w its own TV. In addition, there is a separate room with soaking hot tub — again with its own TV. Balcony is screened. Think we had 5 TVs in our room! TV offers some 40 channels — and none in English. Free, but unsecured, wi-fi. Reasonably fast. Lobby Bar doesn’t exist. It’s a dark, closed room, and never opened. Juice bar was never staffed. Bar area in atrium has a fairly extensive menu, but in reality only had a bottle of Chevis and a bottle of Jack Daniel Black. Meals in the Palace Cafe are always buffet. Usually crowded. Lots of choices, staff to bring utensils/clear tables, etc. Entertainment is swimming mermaids! Catered meals in special dining rooms were elegant and very well done. Conference hall offers good facilities — including simultaneous translation and projection capabilities.

Great value for money

Reviewed By uw0tK8

Really big room for a small price and it looked very nice, the whole place was very clean. The bathroom was very clean and spacious, too. The location was very good. There is a market just across the street and there are a lot of small restaurants down the street. If you walk to the town centre, you'll be there in 15 minutes. Wi-fi connection was excellent. The only problem is that you can hear when someone above you is flushing the toilet and that the receptionists don't speak almost any English. Would recommend it to anyone going to Zhaoqing.

Clean, comfortable & convenient

Reviewed By CausalTraveller

We stayed on the 18th floor facing the lake and shopping mall. Unfortunately, weather was foggy and did not allow us to fully appreciate the view. Room was spacious and comes with all the amenities you would expect from a standard hotel. There is even a pillow menu for u for choose, though not a wide selection. 2 large shopping malls (with 2 huge hypermarts) opposite the hotel, with a shopping street on the left of the hotel and lots of eateries on the right of the hotel. There’s also a Macdonalds around the corner. Other conveniences include: 1) Near to the key attraction of Zhaoqing - Star Lake. Archway Square is just a across the street. From the square, u can: a) take a leisurely 30-45min walk along the lake to the South Gate entrance of Seven Star Crags; b) watch the daily 8pm water fountain show. 2) Bus stop outside the hotel with bus 21 that will bring you to Dinghu Mountain, the other key attraction of Zhaoqing. The public bus ride is ~1hr and cost RMB2. 3) Pick up point for express coach shuttling between Zhaoqing and Hong Kong by one of the coach company. Coach ride is ~5hr and cost abt RMB100+ for 1 way. Counter for booking the coach is located at the right side door of the hotel. We wanted to try the foot massage service at the hotel but maybe because it is Christmas Day, they did not have any staff on standby. We left our room number for them to contact us when there’s staff available and they called after half an hour to say that only 1 staff is available. We gave it a miss as there is 2 of us. Overall, a pleasant stay. While there has been earlier reviews mentioning the hotel as dated, I find it ok and acceptable.

Nice rooms but restaurant has gone downhill

Reviewed By Buffalo B

We stayed here for several days in 2015 and were quite pleased, especially with the daily breakfast. Unfortunately, this year the breakfast quality had declined; you could taste the re-used oil on some of the items and the food was cold, too. The second floor restaurant was still very good; only the breakfast served on the first floor was disappointing. The room quality was OK; as with seemingly all Chinese hotels, paying just a little bit more for a "deluxe" rather than "standard" room makes a huge difference in the quality.

The staff was overwhelmed, but took the time to get us a taxi and book our new room for us (we speak only English.) he second time they were much less helpful and made the inconvenience much worse.

Excellent location for non-fussy travelers

Booked this hotel through elong and it was successfully reserved without the need for advanced payment which we appreciated. Stayed for three nights and the spacious room provided all the basic amenities. Beds were unfortunately very hard, but if your backs ache you can stop by next door at the Star Relaxing Centre for a massage ($68 yuan for 60min). As per previous review, the location was the main draw of this hotel for us. Hotel staff were relatively helpful when approached for advice, and the rare smiles were a bonus. There are two shopping malls across the road, night market with cheap clothes & shoes/boots 5 min walk away at Wen Ming Lu and also 10 min walking distance to the lake. We tried the street food at the night market and it was really good (no, we didn't have a stomachache.) The bus stop to Dinghu Mountain was right at our door step and only costs $2 yuan (bus 21). We took a cab to Seven Stars Crags for $15 yuan, and returned by motor-trishaw for $10 yuan. If you do stay at this hotel, get your entrance tickets to both places with them as they charge $55 yuan respectively, a $5 yuan off the regular price. We also tried the long distance bus company (olympic bus station when translated to english) next door which has several buses running to different parts of Guangzhou throughout the day, and there were only two of us on board when we took the 2.10pm bus on a weekday. The horror of staying in this hotel was spotting a baby roach and some other tiny bug in the room on our last night. Breakfast was pretty disappointing for the $20 yuan extra we paid for daily, that we gave up after the first meal. There are better, cheaper local food out there in the streets.

quiet, western-style bed & breakfast footsteps from seven stars crags park

Reviewed By Tasha S

This is by far the most beautiful, best-styled, and most professionally run hotel/bed and breakfast that I've been to in all of China. My friend and I stayed two nights, each in a different room. One room was 302 on the top floor, what the receptionist said was their nicest room with all wood/tree trunk furniture and a red claw-foot bathtub. That room was about 200rmb more than the ones right below it which have no bathtub but instead feature a giant picture window with an enormous window seat. If you really must take a bath, and I don't blame you, than go for one of the top rooms. But the ones on the second floor actually feel more spacious and after having spent a night in both 302 and 202, both my friend and I prefer room 202 because of the window seat. This is a very small hotel and the receptionist was very helpful with suggestions for places to eat and things to do in the area, however that was all in Cantonese and I'm not sure if there is an English speaker who works here. The hotel is on a little peninsula which juts out into the lake. If you follow the path around you'll find tons of coffee shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, even a little bookshop, but most of these don't open up until evening. Go at night, the shops look so much cuter at night. (The vegetarian/Tibetan restaurant down the road was just okay, the western place Make Some Different was amazing, and Magic Cube was just okay). Seven stars crags is right across the way but you have to go another way to actually enter the park. However there are old ladies on tricycles who will probably be more than happy to help you. It's also an ideal place to stay if you want an amazingly comfortable place to stay. Please note that there were no stores nearby for snacks or whatnot, so bring those. Our room came with fresh fruit, tea, and delicious shortbread cookies. The breakfast in the morning was like western/Chinese fusion, heavy on the carbs with something for everyone (ours had oatmeal, zongzi, toast, potatoes, fruit, an egg, bacon ect). Coffee is available at breakfast but we had to ask for it. Our only suggestion is high quality bath products (shampoo). The rooms were spotless and the view was so, so good.
