Traditional style cottages in large grounds

Reviewed By Devaflam

We were looking for a dog friendly stay in wildlife area on Spanish border with Portugal. Jiniebro is even better than we hoped. Our cottage is new - built traditional style, some are restored. So quiet - just sound of cicadas with vultures and eagles passing overhead. Grounds full of small birds and sweet smell of freesias. Mercedes and Gema very helpful and welcoming - we chose to have breakfast which was very nice. So much to see - dolmens, birdwatching, walking in countryside, interesting towns and villages. We are in Anta - chosen as it has nice patio / yard for dog. Is also accessible for people with mobility problems.

Bit of information in English would be helpful

Reviewed By fourviolets

The room was suitably convent-like with religious pictures, carved wooden headboards and the cleanest bathroom I've ever seen. Unfortunately there was absolutely no information whatsoever about the place in English so we left none the wiser. There are photos of a chapel which must be nearby and I would have loved to have seen and learned about the history of the place. It was pouring with rain the whole of our stay and we dined in sole splendour in the restaurant, which is downstairs in a separate building, with a wood burning stove in the middle of the room and rain hammering down on the roof. The kind owner plied us with breakfast in the same room: meats, toast, cakes, fresh orange juice, coffee! The tv didn't work but I'm sure that was down to the unseasonable weather.

Tranquil Countryside Inn

Reviewed By Donna31522

Carola has done a beautiful job re-furbishing this countryside "farm" to a lovely inn. Our room was large and quite comfortable, with a beautiful, modern bathroom. The staff prepared a delicious lunch of local salads, jamon, salmon and potato tortilla which was served alongside their lake. The lakeside was also a great place to relax with a cocktail in the evening. They have a pool too, and it enjoys a beautiful vista. Great place to relax and unwind after touring. The WiFi was spotty during our visit, but it was being looked into.

Casa Salto del Caballo

Casa Salto del Caballo is situated in the small village of La Fontañera, just a few kilometres from Valencia de Alcántara. It is the last house in Spain, located directly on the border to Portugal. You can literally come in from the Spanish side and walk out through the other doors onto the magnificent São Mamede Natural Park in Portugal. From here you can enjoy stunning views towards the Natural Park Serra de São Mamede and the Castle of Marvão in the Alto Alentejo of Portugal. The buildings date back to the late 19th century, and the location is historically significant. The strategic position of the house has lent it a past always connected to the smuggling trade between Portugal and Spain. Up until 1992, when the borders opened, mainly coffee and leather boots, but also bread, garlic or whatever else was wanted on the other side was smuggled. As the front entrance is in Spain and the backdoor opens onto Portugal, it was a “casa de la duda” – a house in no-man’s land.

The most unique experience right on the Spanish/Portuguese border!

Casa Salto del Caballo is a unique place to stay and it combines different kinds of experiences, featuring many comfortable details. This property might be the best one can find in the whole area, being as close to Marvão, a must-visit in Alentejo-Portugal, as to Valencia de Alcántara, a lovely small town to discover near the Spanish border. The property is very charming and has a very nice garden and pool. The owner, Tamara, which lives in one of the houses of the property, is always happy to help the guests when needed, although respecting their privacy. Tamara is also a great cook and if you are lucky enough she might well be able to prepare something special upon request (including nice cocktails, which will make you want to live at this property for a longer period than just a few days... I don't like to use expression "hidden gem", but it is what this is, no more, no less. Everything perfectly tidy and clean, comfortable bed, and very well located: you might want to explore the surroundings by car or by foot and enjoy many different experiences using this accommodation as your base. Highly recommended!

Wonderful stay at the Finca of Casa Escobar & Jerez

Reviewed By nelladenhoed

If you are looking for nice accommodation in the country side, we can definitely recommend staying at this Finca which belongs to Hotel Casa Escobar & Jerez. Located on the Ex110, a short ride from Valencia de Alcantara, this is a place where you find peace and quiet and where you wake up with the sounds of numerous birds. We stayed a week at the two-bedroom house in March 2012. The house was very comfortable, with a nice living area. We like to do our own cooking most of the time and the kitchen had everything we needed. The beds have good new mattresses. As it was still a bit chilly at night we turned on the heater and it worked perfect. Our host Alfonso made us feel very welcome and he gave us lots of great tips on good birding spots. There are many hiking opportunities in the area, as well as beautiful (old) towns to visit of which Marvao, just across the border in Portugal, was one of our favorites. Valencia de Alcantara has a good supermarket but also a nice outdoor market on Mondays and don’t forget to stop by the hotel Casa Escobar & Jerez to admire the beautiful 16th century building. We had a lovely dinner at the hotel on the last night of our vacation and it made us definitely want to come back for more!

Fantástica distribución de las casas y buena zona común. Jardinería mejorable

Reviewed By FalcoNaumanni
