Only real-deal surfers should brave the torrid waters of Puerta Viejo de Talamanca, known both for their beauty and for their dangerously strong riptides. Surf’s especially up at Salsa Brava and Playa Cocles. Not to fear—the rest of you water bugs can enjoy snorkeling, kayaking and diving in the calmer waters of Cahuita or Manzanillo. Rent a mountain bike to coast to Manzanillo for a full, fun experience.

The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of 25 beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans (some with A/C), and free WiFi. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Caribe Fun Tours is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions.
Me and my partner were there shortly and we can't attest to the quality of the food or anything else. But we went to try and get dinner and not 5 minutes had passed when one of the staff agressively kicked a dog that was hanging around the restaurant . I understand wanting to keep animals out of restaurant for health and sanitary reasons but there's better ways than kicking an innocent animal and possibly hurting it.

We absolutely loved this place and don't have a bad word to say about it. The rooms are really clean and modern and there's plenty of room. You can also open the doors to the balcony and have the screens shut to enjoy the sounds of the rainforest from our room. the rooms are all located within the forest with cute wooden walkways to them. It felt very luxurious and 100000% worth the money. The pools are beautiful and super relaxing. The staff are lovely also. For dinner we got tub tubs into town but you can also rent bikes from the hotel. The breakfast was great and the staff can't do enough for you honestly. There is a tour every morning for you to see some of the surrounding wildlife, we spotted a few sloths and also a toucan. The beds were SO comfy. We also used our drone at the pool which was really cool (when no one was there)

Set just a hop and a skip from the golden sands of Playa Chiquita in Puerto Viejo, Aguas Claras is the only five star hotel on Costa Rica’s sunkissed Caribbean Coast. Nuzzled amidst tropical gardens beside the ocean, ours is a sustainable luxury destination where nature, arts and community harmoniously intertwine. The life work of a local Costa Rican artist, Hotel Aguas Claras offers modern, characterful accommodation, with every corner of the boutique resort designed to deliver the Caribbean experience at its very best.
We stayed here for 10 nights in March. The staff are super friendly here and will do anything to make you comfortable but the icing on the cake for me is the surroundings and the wildlife. On arrival, we were being shown to the hibiscus suite and there was a sloth on the tree right in front of us, so close. We spent some time out on the borrowed banana bikes, did some shopping at the local store and went kayaking, but when resting on the small beach (or pool) you can while away your time spotting the wildlife. While at Aguas Claras, as well as sloths, I saw macaw’s, leaf cutter ants, agoutis, squirrels, lizards, butterflies and birds. The room was comfortable, airy and spacious. (No TV if you feel like you need one). There were vegan options for meals but not many so I did tend to have the same breakfast every day then eat out for lunch and dinner. There are quite a few bars and restaurants within walking/biking distance and plenty to do in the area. A thumbs up from me.

Small Caribbean style boutique hotel situated between Puerto Viejo center and the beach of Cocles. Without claiming to luxury, its comfort is appreciated in this area where it is sometimes difficult to find a quality / fair value. The welcome is personal and organization activities and discoveries upon request. Its philosophy is based on the environment, serenity and openness to the world. Place for sharing and good waves, it is like the a delicious exuberant garden that welcomes it.You will feel in a cocoon of paradise close to hectic activities of Puerto Viejo.
Hotel room was very clean and hotel manager was engaged a lot for our stay. The hotel area is very beautiful. The location is some minutes outside Puerto Viejo village, so the nights are very quiet. Addtional equipment like microwave, coffee machine, tresor, balkony is available in the room. Washing service is also available (organized by the hotel)

Colina Secreta is a family-run glamping hotel settled over 6 acres jungle private reserve at 1.6 km from the renowned Cocles Beach on The Caribbean Sea, and 5 km from Puerto Viejo Town. Colina Secreta is a place where you can connect with yourself, get inspired by the sounds of the private jungle and experience the enchanting atmosphere and warm hospitality. A/C, private parking.
We were in the casa del artista for 3 weeks in the middle of the jungle. The house is very beautiful and the nature surroundings breathtaking. We’ve seen many animals including a sloth climbing a tree right next to the house. Since the house is in the jungle animals are permanent guests in and outside the house for us a perfect way to feel more comfy with them? The house is completely covered in mosquito nets though so don’t be scared. The owners are so hearthwarmy and lovingly nice people and the breakfast they make is a must have in a beatiful environment.

In front or the gorgeous white sand Cocles Beach, winner of Costa Rica`s blue flag for pristine beach. An idyllic romantic hideaway with a family friendly double occupancy price for a family of four. Que Rico Papito Restaurant specializes in food fit for jungle royalty. Massage, facials and delicious body treatments at our Indulgence Spa. Rest easy! Secure Lodging with Safes & Secure Parking.
The resort is VERY rustic. Bungalows are very clean and cozy but no A/C, drinkable water, restaurant, or anything much else. It was too isolated for us with too few amenities. We gotten eaten by bugs in our room. I would liken it to camping. Friendly staff, good breakfast. We moved resorts after one night. Feels like it needs work to get back to pre-COVID capacity.

What a great hidden gem! We moved to this resort when our prior hotel did not meet our expectations and wish we had booked this one from the start. Great rooms (undergoing renovations but not too disruptive), our room was complete and was clean and nice. Great pool with food and drink service and swim up pool bar. You can also walk to the beach through the resort which was a plus. We eat at the restaurant both nights and we’re very happy with the food choices and the quality of the food. We met a lot of people there and everyone was so friendly. Would recommend and stay here again for sure.

Life is at its tranquil best at Villas del Caribe. The days go something like this: You wake to the sound of bird songs and a view from your bed of silvery palms and clear blue sea. You throw open the sliding doors and take to the hammock on the balcony for a little rest, refreshed by the ocean breeze. You may now be ready to take a dip in our swimming pool and enjoy the elevated thatched Jacuzzi for a relaxing massage.Once the lure of the sea becomes too much, you wander through the landscaped gardens onto the beach path, where you face a decision between the long, deserted golden sand beach to the left or the many pristine golden sand beaches to the right. You settle for one of the shallow, sandy natural lagoons formed by the coral reef right offshore, and watch tropical fish wiggle past your toes. After a fresh water shower on your terrace, you walk over to the SeaSide Restaurant for breakfast or a snack, then you take a bike and cycle down the flat paved road past fields, forest, a few thatched bars and restaurants to Puerto Viejo for coffee or a drink, the local gossip, and some good, fresh fish at the beachfront store. You spend the afternoon alternating between the beach and the sea, the loungers on the terrace, and the hammocks on the balcony.
We had a sea-side villa. We loved how spacious it was with fully equiped kitchen and living area with terrasse with two bedrooms and balcony upstaits, 50 m from the sea, across from thr Jaguar Rescue Center. The room had seen some years and nothing was brand new, but clean and in working order. Location was good as we had a car, central to go to various beaches. Breakfast at the hotel restaurant was nuce but there was no bar open in the evening for a drink.

The only tree house right on the beach of the southern Caribbean of Costa Rica. This is your best nature hotel and romantic hideaway.
A way over-priced hostel without the strange people. It's definitely not a hotel let alone a lodge. Below I go in depth on our main issues. In sum for $1200/3 nights at Casa Crystal we expected a clean, comfortable, and functional house. Instead we got a dirty, not functional house, especially kitchen (you won't be able to cook!), with low pressure showers, and an OK beach. Dirty: The houses prioritize the art, not their functionality or comfort. While beds are comfortable, nothing really works. Examples: all appliances are super old, so old that despite that I imagine they do clean them, they don't look clean and you feel gross putting your bread in the toaster, making coffee, or even looking at the mirror in the bathroom. Yes, two mirrors in bathroom and you can't even see your reflection. Kitchen: Everything in kitchen is old, cheap, second-hand or it doesn't work. First and foremost, we couldn't even use the stove. Every time we wanted to use it we had to call the poor maintenance guy to come help us. Cooking took hours. Entire house had literally ONE cooking knife. First afternoon, we wanted to make guacamole (easy stuff) and we couldn't even cut the tomatoes; again had to ask them to sharpen the only knife we had. To makes things worse, kitchen is understocked. We literally had four glasses, a couple plates, there no bowls so even a fruit salad or one morning we tried to make pancakes and had to use a pot as there are no mixing bowls. Also there was one pot and two pans for a house is supposed to host up to 7 people. None of us are the chef's type, but if you want to do simple stuff like a guacamole, pancakes, or even do a salad, you will have a hard time. Showers. Both showers, first floor and second floor had low pressure water; especially upstairs this was a problem. Warm water works. Location: While you can walk to the beach, the area in front of the property has a very narrow beach space and there are lots of rocks there. If you want to go to a nice beach you have to walk like 15 mins to Playa Chiquita and that's very nice. So it's not like you can wake up and just get a dip in the water. Customer Service. The help people are really nice. This is the one saving grace. Whenever we needed to use the stove, the service guy came promptly and helped us. However, manager was resolute in not addressing our overall issues with the stay. So beware.

Excellent place , We saw a lot of amazing animals , the nature is incredible and we stayed in a tipi, nice room , quiet place , perfect to recharge . The only thing was the humidity , the sheets felt humid , for the rest everything was very good . The staff is kind and helpful . I regret no stay one more night there , it was our preferred place “puerto viejo de Talamanca” in Costa Rica.
