We stayed one night in early August during our Shikoku trip. The family room with 4 beds has a sea-facing balcony with beautiful sunrise view. This hotel is convenient for stay if you visit Arts Museum and Naruto Whirlpool nearby. There is a free underground car park. The beach does not look appealing and the swimming pool is swarmed with kids due to summer holiday. So we don't bother to swim at this hotel but use the onsen instead. As we stayed in Annexed building next to Main building, there are two corridors to connect both buildings for passage to lobby on ground floor as well as on upper floor to the onsen. The best thing is the extremely delicious buffet with so many varieties during breakfast and dinner. Friendly staff with nice resort environment, I would love to stay in this hotel if I go to Naruto again.

The restaurants in the xiv are up there with the best in the area. Unbelievable golf courses to be found here, as well as welcoming, friendly staff. The room we had in the Sanctuary Lodge was huge with an enormous jacuzzi and comfortable bedrooms. The golf courses are immaculate. Great spot!

The Grand is one of the many resort stye hotels around Japan that were built towards the end of the 'bubble' days of the 1990s. Regrettably some of these hotels are now closed and those that remain appear to survive on weddings, work parties and Japanese national holidays, when many Japanese take a break and go have fun. That means that outside of the main holidays, these hotels tend to have lots of rooms available at pretty low prices considering what they offer. The Grand is one of them. The hotel is located about 7km from Naruto town so if you're travelling by train, you may need to take a taxi to get here. I suspect the hotel is also serviced by a bus. Note that the hotel is a resort style hotel located where it is because of the views it has of the Onaruto bridge, which is one of the main 3 land access points to Shikoku. This means that the hotel stands alone and is not in town. There is a restaurant serving traditional Japanese menu for dinner and breakfast, so if you're not into that, stock up on some nibbles and drinks in town before coming to the hotel. The nearest convenience store, Yamazaki, is about 2 km away in the direction of Naruto town if you need to top up. So those are the logistics, what about the hotel? It was clearly a 5 star hotel in the day, and is still looking pretty good at about 4 stars. There's a very comfortable lounge looking out to sea where you can gaze, drink free coffee or soft drinks and wonder why life isn't always as good as this. We paid 12,000yen for a room that had perfect views of the Onaruto bridge and was large enough to house a family, including aunts, uncles and second cousins. We're pretty sure that it was not the standard room, but a free upgrade. As with all of these large resort hotels, they're happy to have your custom, so ask for the best room and you may receive. The best part of the hotel (if you don't mind jumping in a bath with strangers) are the onsen on the eighth and ninth floors. There are plenty of washing and bathing areas on the lower floor, as well as a sauna, but it is the view from the ninth floor outdoor bath (rotenburo) which make it special with views out to the Onaruto bridge. You could spend hours up here and, like ourselves, you may be able to sneak your camera in and get some great pictures. I should add that a camera in a Japanese bath is a big no, but some times the views and the opportunities are too great to resist and if there's nobody else there, does it matter!!?? So good that we planned just the one night here and decided to extend for another. If you're exploring all of Shikoku over a number of days, it's too far East to use as a base, but if you have time and want to kick back, this would be highly recommended.

Seaside hotel in Naruto.
We stayed in this hotel as a stopover, driving from Awaji to Shikoku. It's an onsen hotel with both Western-style beds and tatami as bedding options. There is a large carpark space behind the hotel. Breakfast provided was Japanese-style and adequate, with options for rice/porridge, juice and coffee. There are limited options for food around, and had to go into Naruto City for dinner. It was a short drive of about 10 minutes to the boats going out to the whirlpools, and 5 minutes to the Otsuka Museum of Art.

Hotel Ridge is small, modern luxury ryokan that is in a quite location atop a hill overlooking the Naruto Strait. With just ten rooms total, the property really emphasizes privacy and tranquility for every guest. We chose to stay here after taking a tour of the Naruto Uzushio Whirlpools and Cherry Blossom viewing in Tokushima, and were happy with the decision. Recently renovated in 2019, it's not a "traditional" style ryokan. The interior decor and furnishings are much more Western in style - even in the so-called "Waso" (Japanese-style) rooms, there are no tatami flooring nor do you sleep on a futon, so if you're after an authentic experience, look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you're looking for modern and familiar comfort, then Hotel Ridge just may fit the bill. Our Waso room was stylish and reasonable comfortable. At 60 square meters, it wasn't super spacious, nor was the secondary room particularly useful - it simply served as a small sitting area to enjoy the view of the Naruto Strait. It also would've been nice to have a larger television as well as an honest-to-goodness sofa. In that sense, the room layout was more form over function. The bath in the room is not Onsen; furthermore, you have to fill it with water yourself, which is always a hassle and is an inhibitor of instant gratification. While there is a public (gender-segregated) Onsen bath facility on site, I was surprised by the small size of the bath. Although I was alone when I used the bath, if I was forced to share it with even one other person, it would probably have been too close for comfort. We chose to have our dinner at La Table, the ryokan's French restaurant, since we wanted to break up the consecutive kaiseki dinners that were offered at other ryokans earlier in the trip. The service was professional and sophisticated, the waiter was meticulous in explaining every detail of every dish, and each dish serving was beautiful in presentation. However, I did not find the offerings to be particularly innovative or memorable. It was "good," but "good" is something you'll find just about everywhere in Japan, so in that sense I was hoping for a bit more out of our dining experience at Hotel Ridge. On the plus side, the Japanese breakfast spread was impressive - the sheer variety, as well as the creativeness of some of the dishes - was more in line with what I expected of a top-flight (and expensive) ryokan. The restaurant where breakfast is served is also located within a traditionally charming structure, and our table faced a pretty rock garden. Final nitpick... Given the massive size of the property grounds, it would have been easy for them to build villa-style rooms, rather than have one large, continuous structure with rooms connected to one another. Although I did not hear any sounds from our neighbors (it's very likely that nobody was staying in the adjacent rooms, since the property seemed to be running at low occupancy when we were there), it still would've been nice to have a completely private feeling during our stay there. Overall, it's almost certainly the best (and only) luxury choice in the vicinity, and we enjoyed our stay. I would not, however, come to stay here for the sake of staying here. It's just not that type of place.

The host, Ken, made this our most memorable holiday in Japan. The breakfast was great! The rooms were clean and comfortable. The heated blankets were a treat! The shampoo bar and all the countless amenities were a pleasant surprise too! We also met some lovely people at the guest house and saw the best spots due to Ken’s knowledge and him driving us around.
