The 10 best hotels in Moorea, French Polynesia

August 14, 2022 Dorsey Hagwood

The world's largest coral reef eco-system actually consists of 3,000 separate reefs. The island of Moorea serves as the perfect base camp for snorkelers and scuba divers seeking to come face-to-face with the diversity of life that darts among the coral. Non-swimmers can enjoy the same parade of astounding creatures from the dry perch of a glass-bottomed boat. Formed when half of a monolithic volcano crumbled to the blue-green sea, Moorea is an achingly exquisite heart-shaped island that is simply paradise found.

We had a lovely stay at the Sofitel! The grounds are beautiful and well kept. The staff was absolutely wonderful. We had a garden view bungalow but we could see the water from our patio. It was quiet and peaceful. We were there when they did the Tahitian dinner and show. The lady who explained the process of cooking the food and how the ground oven worked did a fantastic job going between French and English. The ladies at the Pearl Romance store were great (I have a separate review of that). We also did a private dine on the beach one night. Well worth the money! We got to meet the chef and had our own private server. One of the best meals we ate in our entire French Polynesian trip. Pros IMO: -Staff -Buffet Breakfast -Best snorkeling on the island. There are coral gardens past the over the water bungalows. If you want to do a lot of snorkeling, then you need to stay here. -Pearl shopping (least expensive place I saw when we toured the island) -Private dining on beach -Chocolate lava cake (I had it 3 times!) -Fantastic views of Tahiti -Near the ferry -The spa was fantastic. I had the hot stone massage and foot reflexology and my husband has the relaxing massage. Cons IMO: -Need more than 2 towels in the bathroom. Hello! I'm a girl and I use two every time I bathe. Hair! -The dinner and lunch menus are not huge. And there is really only the one restaurant. -The rooms are clean, but they could use a little updating and slight maintenance in places. The Sofitel is way on the other side of the island from everything. If you want to leave the resort, be prepared to travel a little ways (This is a pro/con on how you look at it) -The clientele. Now, I say this as an American who has been to many countries. I LOVE meeting other travelers from everywhere. But I know how we Americans can be at times. This hotel has a high French clientele. If you are not a fan of the French, this is not the hotel for you. Bottom Line: I would stay here again. The pro's outweigh any con's tenfold. Ia Orana!

I booked this hotel for a Wedding of my good friend. The policy at the time in French Polynesia was a Vaccination AND Negative COVID test were required. Days before we were to embark on our trip, both myself and my significant other got Covid. We had to cancel the trip. It was not possible to get better and have a negative test in time to make the flight out of the USA. Note, I also Booked the Sofitel for the second half of our trip. I had to cancel all of our flights, our hotel in Los Angeles and this Manava Hotel and the Sofitel. ALL vendors allowed me to cancel with refund EXCEPT THIS HORRBLE HOTEL! They would not even allow me to hold a credit and come another time. I sent them proof of positive result with an at home test. They were insistent that I had to go to the doctor and get a $200 doctors test done just to show them that I had COVID. WHY on earth would I do that?? Why are they the ONLY ONES who would not work with us?? Delta->Full refund. Air Tahiti->Full Refund Marriot Hotels->Full Refund Sofitel->Credit to use at any time for 1.5 years from then. Manava->Sends me emails continuing to ask me for a doctor's test.....even 3 weeks later!! How is that supposed to work??? Absolutely unacceptable. If you are worried about the potential for COVID to hamper your trip, STAY AT SOFITEL!!! You will lose your money with these greedy people. Thank you.

Linareva Moorea Beach Resort

A wonderful stay!

The owners/managers of this resort only bought the Linareva 10 months ago so please don’t let older poor reviews disuade you from staying here. My wife and I have travelled all over the world and we would be hard pressed to name nicer, more gracious hosts. Thank you for everything, David and Vanessa! The staff were also sweet and personable. Basil, the groundskeeper, picked us avocados off the tree. Rumia, who speaks better English than I do, was a delight- always patient and helpful. Selemene was always smiling and pleasant. The resort is located in an especially lovely part of Moorea. The view from the kayaks out on the water looking back on the beach is stunning. The first time we saw it, it took our breath away. You have free access to the recreational equipment at this resort. There are kayaks, snorkeling equipment, lifejackets, fishing equipment, and bicycles. There is an accessible fridge stocked with different wines and beers that is run on an honor system. You write down your name and what you take out. It’s a great system as the fridge is accessible at any time of the day or night. At the end of the dock, you can watch and safely swim with various fish and non aggressive sharks. We even saw a Manta Ray and a large turtle. On the grounds of this resort are many different fruit trees. There is passion fruit, bananas, avocados, starfruit, and papyas. . It is important that you understand that the Linareva is not the Hilton. We had the smallest bungalow and it was located close to the road. Therefore, we could hear traffic noises at right. Other bungalows are larger and likely quieter. However, our bungalow was very clean and there was a kitchenette that we used a lot. Our stay at the Linareva will stand out in our memory as one of our highlights of French Polynesia. One last thing- one of the most endearing things about the owners of this resort is the story about how they came to adopt the resort’s lovely dog, Lucky. I will leave it to the owners to tell the story but it will bring a tear to your eye.

We stayed in a 1st floor (2nd to Americans) apartment. It was exceptionally clean and spacious for two people. We loved having the Washer/Dryer, dishwasher, and full size refrigerator. We found the AC cooled both rooms well if you just left the bedroom door open. I recommend the apartments because they are closer to the beach than most of the bungalows. They came and cleaned once during the week. As with most European hotels, you need to bring your own washcloths. Beach towels can be checked out from the front office free. Dishwasher, washer, and coffee pods can be purchased from front desk for a $1. Knowing this allowed us to pack very lightly. Amazing snorkeling straight out in front of the dock, near the 2 red boat channel markers. Loved watching the "beach dogs" play everyday when their owners returned from work.

If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and unplug this is it! This quaint little hotel is tucked away along the lagoon amongst a lush garden. Each room is uniquely decorated and is absolutely adorable. Our room came with a bar area on our porch complete with refrigerator, microwave, sink, etc. so we could enjoy cocktails and snacks in the privacy of our lodging but still be in the midst of a lovely garden area. The lagoon is a great place to swim and see some rays and sharks and other fish swimming around. We spend lazy days just sitting around reading, talking, swimming and relaxing and it was beyond great. Now, there is no beach but no worries, one can sun on the deck and refresh in the lagoon. Don't expect all of the amenities of a high end resort--that isn't what Eileen is trying to do here--she is providing an exquisite setting for her guests to just relax and unwind. The entire staff is great and can accommodate most requests. Do keep in mind that food service isn't provided but you can get food delivered from many local restaurants and for lunch there is a great place right next door! Even better, there is a market about a 2 minute walk from the property where you can get fresh fruits, baguettes, croissants, beer, wine, liquor, and even prepared meals, etc. for very, very reasonable prices. We made our own breakfasts using the market--nothing better than fresh mango and papaya with croissants and coffee!

The hotel is great find and bargain. The restaurant literally has the best view. The staff are friendly and quite attentive. Food is overpriced but this is common for the area. We had a larger room as this was a friends trip with 3 adults. However, we heard from others that their bungalows were on the small side. Nevertheless, it's worth the price. A lot of people stay here before traveling on to Bora Bora. I was also impressed with their bookkeeping...every charged was explained at checkout. The picture is part of the restaurant.

Everyone on the island we meet in Moorea seem to know Tama and his family and we were lucky to stay with them here and experience the real Tahiti.I found out about this place through waterways travel that only sells the top exotic surf and travel destinations. The surf and bay are incredible and we got to surf next to the French surfing olympic team and that let's you know you are in the right place. Yes it is hot and bring the mosquito spray but what we learned from his family and the amazing conversations we had with them and the International guests from all over the world far outweighed any of the minor hardships.I found a lot of strength in myself I didn't even know I had just by being there, both in the surf, and at The Surf Inn with them. We will return again soon to stay and surf with them again.

I was going to the restaurant for sunset. They charge 15000f ($15) to access the public beach. They tell you it’s public but you have to pay to walk through their property. Very small beach and not worth it. The receptionist tells you the bar will give you 15000 credit to your bar bill. But that was not the case. The whole experience felt dishonest.

We had the fried tuna with yummy greens beans that never tasted as good. The tuna was so fresh. Simple seasoning and very good flavor. The lobster was so tender and fresh. You could taste the ocean with every bite. The possion cru was soft and the sauce they used was delicious. And the homemade crème brulée was perfect. This restaurant is within walking distance from the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort. The best part if you visit during mango season you can pick up mangoes on the side of the road as you walk to Fare Meheata. Our server JULIEN was very friendly. He made us feel like family and was a really genuine guy. Learned so much about FP during our meal.
