Matheran is all about the views. Easily accessible via scenic rail from Mumbai, this refuge in the Sahyadri Hills is blissfully free of motor vehicles and affords nearly three dozen lookouts over the Western Ghats and the region's village-dotted plains. Porcupine Point is anything but prickly—rather, it’s an ideal spot for gorgeous sunsets, especially at the aptly named Panorama Point. Avid hikers hit the densely forested and wildlife-rich route to the ruins of Prabalgad Fort.

Amidst the lush greens of Matheran, sheltered from the chaos of the city, Radha Cottage is your go-to place to unwind after a hectic week, or just spend quality time with your loved ones. Laden with archaic grace, the 125-year-old heritage property of Radha Cottage guarantees a royal yet welcoming experience. The prime bungalow was originally the dwelling of Sir Pherozeshah Mehta. The 3rd president of Congress, fondly known as the Lion of Bombay, whose statue stands proud in front of the BMC HQs. The vintage aesthetic of the bungalow has been preserved with only a few modifications done to cater to the requirements of this day and age. The noteworthy wooden fittings illuminate the vibe of aristocratic nobility. Furthermore, the one-acre-wide spacious property, brimming with greenery, guarantees a grandiose stay. Since the property is about a kilometre from the unrest of the market, guests can relish the feeling of tranquillity and calm. The sought after 7-point-circle, including Sunrise Point and One Tree Hill Point, starts not more than 5 minutes away, and guests can be enthralled with the charm of Matheran. The little chowk, with its romantic aura, is an excellent place for couples to enjoy a dreamy walk. On returning back to Radha Cottage, guests can savour the rich Maharashtrian cuisine, the pièce de résistance of which, is Puran Poli. One can enjoy the ambience of antiquity while sipping on a relaxing cup of tea. The exquisite vintage aura combined with the pristine element of nature is sure to provide an enchanting experience.
Our group of engineering friends decide to have a small get together and needed a place accessible from Nashik, Mumbai and Pune. We decided Matheran and looked for a good hotel we finalised Radha Cottage and booked the entire heritage Bunglow for us. Next things couldn’t have been better. Extremely well maintained amongst nature, Radha Cottage is really beautiful place in Matheran Courteous staff and excellent food added joy to our meeting after a long Covid break. All together, Radha cottage is enjoyable place for family as well as friends trip and very much affordable for the service and class it offers.

I had recently travelled to Matheran and the bookings were found to be full in all the hotels. But I was keen to book hotel room at Kumar Plaza. I had a wonderful guest experience through support of Vandana from Kumar Plaza who not only booked a room but also kept consistent follow up on my stay and if anything was missing. Undoubtedly our stay has been wonderful but the customer service was exceptional. We would definitely plan to stay again in our next trip in Kumar Plaza only. Thank you Rajesh

Westend Hotel with 29 cottages and 4 tents are brimming with old world charm, what with their beautiful old British-style preserved architecture and spacious verandas. From the minute you step in, you almost wonder if such hotels exist. And to think, its mere 2 hours away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Tucked away in the forest, all you will see are the tree tops and hear only the sounds of the forest. The beautiful Lake Charlotte is just 10 minutes away as is the main bazaar and a few of the famous viewpoints. The sole aim of the hotel is to make you relax. Trek through the forest, amble along the natural red mud paths, take a horse ride to the various tourist attractions, play the numerous indoor-outdoor games, soak in the silence or just laze on the hammocks, there's enough and more to keep you busy for as long as your stay. And whatever you choose to do, you'll certainly leave with a rejuvenated mind.
We checked in Westend Hotel, Matheran on 24th May and checkout of on 27th May. I’d try to avoid the location details of the resort, which are covered in the other posts, and would try to summarise our stay experience that had many pros and some cons. ++ Cons- Not Showstoppers, but resolving them will earn that extra half a point to make the entire customer experience -5/5. Phones don’t work- We had mentioned as part of the booking that we’d be checking in late in the evening on 24th May ( after 6 PM IST). However I decided to call the front desk @ 2 PM to reiterate that I’d be coming a bit late. I browsed through their website and called on the numbers as mentioned in the ‘Contact Us’ Section ( from the website # 91-9757 333 786, +91-9969 444 786) . the one ending with 786 was switched off and the other one was unattended. Some one did briefly pick the phone up but the conversation was too short to convey to the front desk about our late arrival. Suggestion – Could you please mention phone numbers that’ll be attended to? Waiting for hot water- Room 23 the water takes ages to heat and some times we need to constantly juggle the flow of the water to keep the temperature to an optimum level lest we get cold water again. The trick was to keep the geyser switched on for 10 min before filling the bucket with hot water, and then again switch on the geyser ( turn off the tap )and wait for 10 mins before filling the bucket again ( Obviously, the capability of the bucket was more and hence more than 2 refills). So if we have three members in a room , it'd take nearly an hour for all of us to have a hot temperature bath. Suggestion- It’d be really nice to have a geyser that’d cater to bare minimum necessity of a quick bath that’d save a lot of hassle and noticeably , time. The Housekeeping woes- The tea, coffee in the room was not replenished most of the times, and we ended up calling the help every time we required something on the table. It’d have been good , if the replenishment was prompt and have been done everyday,. It’d saved the efforts, ours as well the team’s too! Its not a Refrigerator- The small refrigerator provided in each room may be would chill a bottle, but if you want food items to be kept overnight, I’d be sceptical as there are chances of food getting spoilt . Pros Smiling, helpful Reception – Mr Chaphekar and Mr Bijan are available for every person, and they put in extra effort to see that the stay of the pax is hassle-free. Thank you both! Any call to the reception from the toom is attended to promptly, and resolved quickly An entertainer in a Help- Rajkumar (part of the housekeeping staff) is quick, efficient , hard working and jovial. Rajkumar and the team tried to resolve most of the cons listed here, albeit with no so consistent success. However, his and the team’s efforts are much appreciated! The non-functional refrigerator in the room was replaced promptly . Spoilt for Choice- the buffet food spread ( be it b/f , lunch or dinner) was sumptuous, and we were spoilt for choice. The food quality was good, and the service very prompt! Delightful restaurant Service – we Ordered an ala-carte meal and couldn’t finish what we had ordered. I personally despise the thought of wasting food, so I requested Mr Prasad and the Kitchen staff to help me store the extra food in the Kitchen refrigerator. Not only did they keep the food in the refrigerator- they also reheated the food for us, the following afternoon. That was a delightful experience! Outsourced laundry – The website states ‘Laundry Service’ in Home > Amenities section, but just to note that the resort does not have an in house laundry. So the website information is slightly misleading or is incomplete. Would have been good, if the type of laundry service was explicitly mentioned as outsourced. I usually travel light, and carry minimum set of clothes , and I prefer resorts that provide laundry services. Anyways, the type laundry service was not a glitch, on the contrary the agency that provided this service to the resort was prompt, very efficient and very helpful. Overall Experience- 4.5 /5 , and as I have stated if the small glitches in the form of cons are resolved. I wont hesitate to provide 5/5 to the resort. Do the cons impede me from visiting the resort again? Absolutely not- as the overall experience was pleasant and indeed, memorable! Thank you- Westend.

The Byke Brightland is nestled in India's smallest hill-station, Matheran. It offers enchanting deluxe & duplex rooms, a Pure Vegetarian Restaurant and, a Swimming Pool amidst the lush green forest. A sprawling 170-year old British mansion, Barr House was the second of the original British residences in Matheran, built for Captain Barr of the Royal Army and later owned by an eminent Parsi family for decades. Nestling under a canopy of towering Jamun trees, barely a hundred metres from Lake Charlotte and close to popular points like One Tree Hill, Echo Point etc, this stately colonial building was painstakingly restored by Francis Wacziarg, an Indophile French connoisseur and today is the favourite haunt of Mumbai’s eclectic mix of artistes, intelligentsia and the well-heeled, who want to get away from the stress of hectic city life and the relentless onslaught of information, the blessing as well as the bane of modern life. So iconic is the grand veranda that Barr House is today known as the “Verandah in the forest”. Sink into a world of colonial charm with no interference from technology and reconnect with nature and oneself. In the evenings try a perennial Parsi favourite, Dhansak and brown rice or tuck into a rich home-made chocolate ice-cream or better still, a fresh jamun ice-cream made with jamun collected from the towering trees in the estate. Or play scrabble in the stately Dubash hall, curled up on one of the sofas, sipping a cup of Cona coffee made with organic coffee straight from our plantations in Kodaikanal, listening to the philharmonic of nature, or enjoy a cup of tea with a slice of matured plum cake in true colonial style. The kitchens dish out hearty Continental and Mediterranean fare as well as earthy Marathi dishes from around the region. Better still; enjoy a four course candle light dinner in the communal dining hall, at the ancient 18 seater oak table. Barr House has a character which has remained firmly rooted in its colonial past and is immersed in the natural splendour of Matheran.
At the good fortune of spending My 25th anniversary at matheran and selected this beautiful property and I was fortunate to do so .my wife was very happy we were planning to stay one day but we extended for today's and we are glad we did that, because we experienced extremely hospitality by the manager Mr ratish and his staff the rooms are used pretty old but sufficient. could have been more luxurious but for the value for money it is rated 5 stars anybody wanting to get away from Mumbai at a reasonable price compared to Lonavala this is a good escape. you will have to park your car there after send your baggage thru porter. normally and then you can walk it up to the hotel it is a 45 minutes walk not tiring at all but definitely it is a walk! You could choose to take the horse or you can also take the train and then walk a little but we are coming here more often now thanks to our excellent experience all the best to the team
