Proud Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the most important of its kind. Visitors will be awed as they explore its stone curves, array of turrets, and displays of armor, weapons, and maps. Suizenji Jojuen Garden is downright cinematic, a playground of slopes and dips and trees, in a million shades of green. Cherry blossom season is a lovely time to visit.

First of all, the hotel location quite good as the busy shopping street is nearby within walking distance. However, the hotel room is really small even we booked the kumamon twin room, especially the crowded bathroom with small toilet inside make you feel really squeeze everything in the room. Overall everything was up to money value and the daily essentials were provided, I can only say you get what you pay for.

Hotel
I had a corner double room which had two big windows. There was no room safe and no comfy chair to sit in. The bed was hard and the sheets didn’t fit properly. There was a stained mattress cover. The pillows were soft and comfortable and the bed was made up with a duvet. There was no cupboard just a hanging area with hooks. Because the area outside the bathroom was wide I was able to open my large suitcase easily. Furthermore, there was a useful gap next to the entrance where I was able to store my suitcase out of the way. There was no English tv but the wifi was very good. The air conditioning was noisy. Unusually (when compared with the other Japanese hotels I stayed in) no cotton wool pads were provided. No bottled water was provided. The bathroom was a capsule/modular style bathroom but it wasn't as cramped as some! Because the hotel is in the middle of a covered shopping precinct there are tons of restaurants around. I normally went around the corner to pick up a coffee from Starbucks and a delicious bread/egg sandwich in a little restaurant. However, on the day I left, I was leaving before they opened so I had breakfast in the hotel. Not only was it expensive but it had an extremely limited choice. For £10 - I had 1 fried egg & 1 piece of toast and some yoghurt! It was 7 minute walk to the bus station (for the bus to the airport). The hotel arranged parking in a nearby multi-storey car park which was about 7 minutes walk away. Some staff spoke good English and provided invaluable sightseeing suggestions (Kikuchi gorge).

I have stayed at the Nikko Hotel in Kumamoto several times. However, this stay was to be a three-month stay for my Fulbright Scholar’s award to conduct research, network, collaborate, and provide lectures throughout Japan. Because of the unprecedented COVID-19, the world changed and the U.S. State Department requested my return to the U.S. I felt so safe that I was somewhat reluctant to returning to the U.S. because they hadn’t even mandated the use of masks or social distancing. Once travel becomes safe again, I most eagerly will return to Kumamoto and will only plan to stay at the Nikko Hotel. I would like to extend my deepest personal gratitude to Rooms Reservation Manager, Mr. Munehiro Mio who made sure every personal requested detail was honored, and to the entire team at Nikki Hotel for a wonderful stay during a difficult time. Thank you for making me feel very comfortable and, most of all, safe. A special acknowledgement to Ruwan Pathmathilake (originally from Sri Lanka) who personally stored all my luggage during my trips to attend meetings, and who was the only one who spoke fluent English. Most Fulbright Scholars bring along their families to experience the culture of their host country. Unfortunately, my husband was unable to join me because of his own practice, so it was very important for me to be in a safe and convenient environment while living in a country where I did not speak the language. There is very close monitoring and security of who enters the elevators. Upon return, I was always warmly greeted and escorted to the elevator by staff. As the elevator doors close, this very special staff member deeply bows which is certainly not practiced in the U.S., which always makes me feel very honored. Whether for business or pleasure, Hotel Nikko is the perfect place located with Tsuruya department store and a fantastic upscale grocery store directly across the street, a new bus station close by with eateries and shops, direct bus services (to airport), street trolleys, and two arcades filled with boutiques and restaurants. There’s even a Starbucks located directly outside. But, my most favorite is the patisserie (bakery) located within the hotel who has the most delicious fig and walnut bread rolls… I always bring several home and can’t wait to go back just for these rolls. The only things lacking (besides more English-speaking staff), is access to a business center and gym. Other than that, Nikko Hotel is the place to stay when in Kumamoto. Be sure to request a room on one of the two top floors that have been recently renovated, with direct views of the Kumamoto Castle. Each room is equipped with a Nespresso coffee machine. Thank you ALL from the bottom of my heart for making my stay in Kumamoto truly memorable and for making the first part of my Fulbright very special. I can’t wait to return to my home away from home.

I stayed here for 6 nights as part of a work trip to Japan. I absolutely loved the Ana Crowne Plaza Kumamoto New Sky. I had been in Tokyo and stayed in the Hyatt Regency in Shinjuku and did not think I would get another room as big in Japan but room 2188 was enormous and with a beautiful view over the river. Fabulous bathroom, again big by Japanese standards. The staff were exceptional in all parts of the hotel from the doormen to the receptionists to the room service servers to the lovely ladies in the hotel shop. The room service was excellent and not too pricey by Japanese standards. I loved the friend chicken! The location is a little out of the centre and I spent one night in the much more centrally located Hotel Nikko but I much preferred the Ana Crowne Plaza. Out of six hotels I stayed in over seven weeks on this extended work trip in Japan, this was my favourite.

Me and my friends booked 2 types of room. We booked the newly renovated room and my friends booked the old rooms. We paid 70% for our room. Same floor. We felt ripped off! It was 29c outside, the ac is not cool enough in our room, it’s around 26c coolest. In contrast, my friends olds rooms were nice and cool.... Our room is significantly smaller then the old rooms, tv on the wall but we can bearly walk pass the bed. Why do they charge extra 70%? You got a nice clean bath room, yup, it’s very nice but not worth the money as you are not sleeping in the washroom. We were pretty upset with our stays and felt ripped off.....

The hotel is located in the neighborhood of the Kumamoto Prefecture Office. It is convenient if you have business with the office or somewhere close. A touristic spot, Sizenji Park, is also close. On the other hand, it is a bit far from the downtown Kumamoto and JR Kumamoto station. From the JR Kumamoto station, you need to take a tram for 30 minutes and to walk for 10 minutes. The hotel itself is very good, much better than a typical Japanese “business” hotel: a room is maintained very well and a bottled water is provided for free of charge. A fitness room is also available for free, but it closes rather early. The internet access is only by the LAN cable.
