At check out we were not given the Go-to travel discount. The explanation was because we had not booked at the hotel itself but via expedia. If we had cancelled the expedia booking and booked at the hotel directly we would have received the discount, so the explanation of the receptionist. However, this discount campaign is even on the Japanese website of expedia........ I did not even receive a reply to my mail I sent to the hotel in which I asked to reconsider and credit the discount. Given these circumstances I cannot leave a positive comment.

“We will help our guests make lasting memories!” This was the goal we set three years ago. For 14 generations, Tsutaya has handed down the traditional atmosphere of the Kiso Valley and the spirit inherited from our ancestors. We feel it is our responsibility to continue this legacy. [The qualities of our inn.] 1, The fusion of traditional and modern-our special meal [Kyoh-oh cuisine Ogottsuo] A relaxing space for you, and a bath to heal your body and soul. 2, The innkeeper’s vegetable garden. 3, Choosing your accommodation style. 4, Our herbal bath (A bath with many kinds of medicinal herbs) has been loved by travelers since ancient times. 5, The [seh-seh-rah-gee] bath. It’s very popular with the local women! 6, The road itself is a famous place in the Kiso Valley. 7, The moonlight will show you around the Kiso Road at night.
After the long second day of trekking it felt like paradise arriving here. Lovely onsen to unwind and soothe our aching limbs. Charming welcome and delicious meal. very much appreciated. Would definitely stay here again.

The most expensive accommodation of our 11-day trip but I should say that it was money well-spent. When we arrived at Kiso Fukushima Station, we went to the information centre opposite the station to ask the staff there to help us inform the ryokan about our arrival. We waited about 15minutes at the centre for our shuttle bus to pick us up. The ride to the ryokan was scenic and relaxing. We stayed in the Japanese style room in the old building of the ryokan. A spacious and cosy room with clean private toilet and bathroom. Dining at the restaurant was a great experience. Our Japanese style dinner and breakfast were delicious. The beautifully presented food was served and introduced to us by the hospitable restaurant staff. However... there was too much food. We felt bad that we could not finish all the yummy food. Think it will be good if ryokan could reduce the portion of rice and noodles and let guests request for more if they need. The ryokan also organised free star-gazing session for its guests. A rare chance for us to look at the star-filled sky from the pitch dark summit and learn about the milky way, constellations... Our guide cum driver was very passionate about astronomy and he knew a lot about the stars... It will be perfect if he could communicate in English... What we like the most about this ryokan is the people... the reception lady, the star-gazing guide, the restaurant staff, the shuttle bus driver.... they were all very zealous staff. The ryokan owner was lucky to have staff like them.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this Hotel. The room was clean and comfortable and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Dinner and breakfast were both traditional Japanese and the staff were helpful in explaining the menu for both meals. We tried everything and loved it all. We location is very quiet and just what we were looking for after the business of Tokyo. One thing to mention would be that our sat nav bought us to the correct place but we were confused as outside the name is Wald Hotel and it is only on entering the building that there is a sign saying "welcome to the Morino". Obviously a name change has occurred but when writing (Oct 2019) there was no outside signage. Just a heads up for anyone driving to the hotel. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

The hosts could not have been more helpful, despite our inability to speak much Japanese. En-suite private onsen was great, and the rooms comfortable in traditional Japanese style. Meals were amazing- again traditional Japanese cuisine; many small delicious portions all served with a smile and an explanation of ‘ what it was and how to eat it’ in English. Truly excellent dinner and breakfast. Highly recommended, and straight across the road from the local train station ( but not noisy at all).

I stayed at the Nezame for one night as part of a hiking holiday. The hotel is located opposite a convenience store/roadhouse just south of Agematsu. If you're walking, keep in mind that you will have to come through Agematsu and then continue down the highway for a little way. It is immediately on the Nakasendo route. Check in was quick and efficient. Room size was small, and toilets/bathroom were located separately. The public bath was quite good, with a stunning view down the valley opposite. After a long day's hiking, it was very welcome indeed! I did not have meals, but there was a restaurant onsite for guests to use. Unusually for a hotel of this kind, there was free public internet available in the lobby. Overall, a good stop for a night or two if you are not looking for anything too traditional or fancy.

Yui-an, renovated 200 years old folk house is a hostel on the Nakasendo trail surrounded by rich nature. Pick-up service, private parking, WiFi, a shared kitchen available for free. Japanese and western style cuisine and drink served at the cafe/bar in the property. Want to sense the joy of life in contact with nature and tradition in Japan? This is the right place to visit!
Hostel Yui-an is a special place. My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in December while traveling throughout Nagano, and we're so happy we did so. We were welcomed with such warmth from the owners and staff, and we really enjoyed getting to know them. It's an old, traditional, historic building tucked away in the mystical mountains and it's been beautifully renovated with such vision, creativity, and skill. I was in awe of the architecture and details within the building. My husband and I were very comfortable and cozy in our private room, I LOVED soaking in the Japanese soaking tub both nights, and nothing could beat waking up with a delicious cup of coffee and peering out onto the mountain landscape in the morning. Dinner was unbelievably delicious and fresh and I enjoyed drinking their homemade plum wine! Yum! We enjoyed learning about how they farm on their land, we met their chickens and ate the freshest eggs ever, and we even saw how they have started an indigo dying business... Wow! We even asked where they purchase the pottery they use for tableware because we were so impressed by the beauty of it. Hostel Yui-an has the most relaxing, peaceful, and inviting feel... It's a place we could easily stay for a while and absorb the natural wonder of the Kiso Valley. Thank you so much for our outstanding stay!

This is a beautiful out of the beaten path Ryokan. The rooms are nice and large, indoor and outdoor Onsen are great and the view of Mt Ontake from every room is breathtaking. Food and service here is also excellent. There is also a horse stable approx a km away. Perfect place for a quiet environment.

This hotel is a nice and comfortable place to spend a few days. The traditional rooms are great and the view of the river and town really makes the place. The onsen is a great perk, especially for after long mountain treks. The staff generally know enough English to be helpful. I wish I could give it a 4.5, the only downside is that it is a little dated and dark.
