3-5 to 4 stars. Large resort style hotel on a pretty autumn, tree lined lake; but well away from other activities. The carpets and settee in room #472 were quite stained but cleanliness overall was otherwise very good. For the time of year and the off the beaten track location of the hotel, its twin bed room std room pricing was quite expensive. The bed pillows were very thin but reception was able to provide more, to try to get a more comfortable sleep. A small window could be opened but the air con could not be adjusted below a too hot 24 C. A very pleasing bathroom with a traditional western shower space. Free external car parking and free easy to access, good speed, in room Wi-Fi. A pleasing if pricy (4400 Y pp) evening buffet dinner is recommended as was the equally pleasing and again pricy (2200 Y pp) buffet breakfast. Sufficient western style foods too. The main dining room is huge. Our travel friends enjoyed a shared cheese pizza in the lounge bar for their more budget dinner. In autumn (best here in early Oct in 2019) the hotel surrounds, accessible parts of the lake shore and surrounding farmland forest edges are ablaze with foliage colour. A car is definitely needed to stay here and tour locally; but this fitted in well on our 10 day Hokkaido self-tour with a hire car from Hakodate. Sufficient English was spoken at reception and at dining entry.

This place seems hugely popular with locals and we might be the only foreigners there but no issues. The room didn't have a shower. Have to go to basement to use bathhouse and onsen. Definitely an experience in a good way!

Stayed one night at the hostel while passing through town. It's located on a farm, good location to the national park and quiet because it's set so far back from the road. Overall, for one night it was fine. Dorms are good size but even in fall, the room is very hot and stuffy. There is a fan but no other ventilation. Was nice to have a sink in the room to get ready at night. Showers and baths on the main floor are a bit dated but fine overall. A family lives at the hostel and they are nice but not super friendly, and it felt like I was intruding on someone's home. Sound carries VERY well in the building too so if you have noisy people (like I did), you hear everything late at night. Breakfast was good and plentiful, traditional Japanese cuisine. The dinner gets raved about a lot because it's homemade and multi-courses. I thought it was fine, nice change of pace and nice to have a home cooked meal, but I think it's overpriced. That said, there is literally nothing around the hostel so it is a convenience. You cannot cook your own food, any food you bring in, they will store until you leave. Checkout is at 9am, which is ridiculous given the cost of the hostel. Breakfast is from 7:30 - 8:30am but you gotta go at the beginning to get the best pickings. Given the location, it was a fine choice but I wouldn't go out of my way to stay again. While it's a youth hostel and the family aspect would normally be nice, it felt like you were crashing a someone's home and they didn't care if you were there or not. Credit cards accepted and one of the women speaks very good English.

I spent 2 nights here, after birdwatching in the area , fantastic red crowned cranes and whopper swans, we arrived at the hotel. The room was perfectly adequate, toilet and shower. It is typical Japanese, tatami mats you must take off your shoes, the staff will lay your futon mattress out and bedding. I actually slept on 3 futons the floor can be very hard. It may be minus 15 outside but inside it was lovely and warm. I enjoyed the onsen , it is open to the public. Laying in the hot water in the steamy onsen room was very relaxing and refreshing. In the room you get a traditional Japanese garment to wear, I wore it to the onsen and to dinner. The food here is fantastic, if you are new to Japanese food you are in for a treat. I enjoyed my stay here , but the highlight was the onsen.

Asanebou is located within a 10 min drive from Lake Mashu and Mashu Station. Although there is no bathroom provided, you can get a coupon to an onsen hotel nearby(1 min drive). For the price you pay, it is worth it as the rooms are huge. In addition, the breakfast and dinner prepared by Taka-san is exceptional. Taka-san is very friendly and helpful. He shares his travel and photography experiences around Hokkaido and provides great suggestions on interesting things in the vicinity. I would definitely return back here

Owed this feedback for too long. We actually stayed in Oct2019. Took a bus from Mashu Station and arrived early before check-in time. Gentleman at reception was so kind to let us into our room on 2nd floor. No lifts and we had 4 luggages for 2 females. Appreciate so much for sending them to the room. Apologies for the trouble but we were spending 1mth in Hokkaido. We stayed 3nights and were very satisfied with room. It's kept to the basic and towels were thin but it's fine as room was very clean and tidy. Rate is unbeatable and stay was pleasant throughout. Thank you for the kind hospitality. For those who don't drive, bus-stop is walking distance to/from Mashu Station.

There is a cupboard near the reception with Japanese style bathrobe/light kimono/YUKATA and clearly written "for free rent". We do double confirm with the staff these light kimono is free to be rent, and he said yes. Then we also take away the wodden slipper to take a few photo (even it does not fit at all), and the staff watch us take the wodden slipper without say anything. During check out, the staff suddenly present us a bill, and said the wooden slipper cost us 4000 yen EACH. First, we do ask in advance the light kimono is free to be rent. If the wooden slipper is not free, the staff should voice out clearly. However the staff only watch us take that without saying anything. Secondly, there does not have any price show in the cupboard, neither the box of the wodden slipper. The staff emphasis as we already "wear it" we need to pay. Is it totally not fair to pay for a product we do not know the price in advance. Since we need to continue our journey, we do not argue with the staff and pay the bill and leave. Leaving with a very bad impression in this hotel.
